I feel quite optimistic about the England match now Gawain has drawn.
I'm going to judge the decision to rest David entirely on the outcome

Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan (and England) on course for wins, along with India 2. India look like to hold the USA to a draw, which would mean India 2 get the bronze medals. England will be somewhere in a tie for fourth with not sure how many other teams.
No idea who has the better tie-break for the gold medals, but some games still going on are unbalanced and could change things in the key matches, so not tie-break time yet. (No idea either how England's tie-break is looking.)

Well, I spoke too soon about England's 'win'. Luke seems to have a level position now, and in danger of losing if he can't find the right 41st move. Mickey in a dead-drawn rook endgame. Other two boards drawn.
When I say 'level' position, I of course mean a horrendously complex position that many players (even of Luke's strength) would struggle to cope with. Looks like Luke loses his queen with best play, but may have enough compensation.

In the Womens, India (17) are about to lose to the USA (15)
Ukraine (16) are 1 up with 1 to play against Poland (16), and although it is Kiolbasa who is still playing, it looks like a drawn ending
Georgia (16) look likely to beat Azerbaijan (16)
England look likely to lose to Hungary

I hope Leonard is enjoying the event. I suspect he probably is with many of the Uzbek and Indian juniors he has been following for the last decade coming of age.Geoff Chandler wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 12:04 amMaybe Leonard can come up with or use 'David Howell Wins Gold by Making a Big Splash in India.'
I think Luke had an "only a computer can defend" position, seems we are heading for the dreaded last round loss

In the Open, looks like Armenia and Uzbekistan will win, which will presumably give the latter the title on tiebreak

England women now have drawing chances v Hungary after a turn around on board 2
The team has played well in my view, maybe the coaching has made the difference

Impressed with the Moldova board 1, drawing with Carlsen and Adams.

Sindarov (for Uzbekistan in the Open) has to be careful to hold the draw the exchange up. Could be a potential pitfall.

Adding Katarzyna & Lan Yao to the team has also helped.Mick Norris wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 9:39 amEngland women now have drawing chances v Hungary after a turn around on board 2

In other news, Tim Kett (Wales), who many of you will know, secured his FM title in the last round.

Ditto the women's with Georgia and Ukraine, not that I can guarantee the tiebreakMick Norris wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 9:25 amIn the Open, looks like Armenia and Uzbekistan will win, which will presumably give the latter the title on tiebreak

I regret to inform you that none of these teams has broken their duck today, nor any of the Seychelles players.JustinHorton wrote: ↑Mon Aug 08, 2022 4:28 pmNiger and Gambia don't seem to have played today: have they packed it in early or was there another reason? Niger are one of only two teams in the open to be without a match win, the other being the British Virgin Islands....in the women's competition the only winless sides are Sierra Leone and the Seychelles, all of whose game points, save defaults, have been scored by the same player.

Wasn't it you, rather than Jonathan Rogers, who made the quoted comment?JustinHorton wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 10:27 amKiolbasa is going to lose (EDIT: has lost).
