But Nepo defends well and clinches a draw with Caruana to keep his lead intact.

I was hoping Nakamura would make the tournament more exciting by winning, but he has lost to Radjabov. Rapport has lost to Firouzja and Ding is beating Duda (who is not doing at all well now, as he will be last).
That should leave the standings after nine rounds (only 5 rounds to go):
1. Nepomniachtchi (6.5)
2. Caruana (5.5)
3. Ding, Nakamura (4.5)
5. Radjabov, Firouzja, Rapport (4)
8. Duda (3)
(Unless Ding fails to win, somehow.)

Duda blundered on move forty, an old theme.
Nepo has three Whites in his next four games, the exception being Firouzja in round eleven. I am guessing that if he can get them (and if he does not lose in round eleven) he will be happy with draws in all of those games.

Chances Carlsen will agree to play Nepo again? I'd say 30%

I don't think Carlsen will have any fear of Nepo, after the implosion in their match.
Maybe a 50-50 chance of the match taking place, with Magnus starting with a big psychological advantage.

Its not just "will Carlsen play?", if we are being brutally honest a Russian being his challenger maybe isn't ideal right now.

Carlsen might have his reasons not to defend his title, but I don't have the impression that he is the sort of person who would discriminate on the basis of the challenger's place of birth, any more than their race, religion, sexual preference or anything else on the list.Matt Mackenzie wrote: ↑Mon Jun 27, 2022 8:28 pmIts not just "will Carlsen play?", if we are being brutally honest a Russian being his challenger maybe isn't ideal right now.

I wasn't saying that specific to MC, but much more generally.

But it is up to MC, isn't it? He doesn't strike me as someone who will be bullied by hysterical public opinion.Matt Mackenzie wrote: ↑Mon Jun 27, 2022 10:08 pmI wasn't saying that specific to MC, but much more generally.

Not necessarily. If you read some recent tweets by Nielsen, you will see that he thinks that Nepomniachtchi needs to go much further in denouncing Putin than he has done so far before being allowed to play a World Championship match.
Nielsen considers that this should be a decision for the FIDE General Assembly.

Presumably he would first revoke Article 4.4 of the FIDE Charter.David Sedgwick wrote: ↑Tue Jun 28, 2022 11:14 amNot necessarily. Discriminating on grounds of political opinions is certainly out. Unlike in Karjakin's case, it can scarcely be argued that Nepo has brought chess into disrepute.

It can be argued and it is being. (I am not saying that I agree.)NickFaulks wrote: ↑Tue Jun 28, 2022 1:21 pmPresumably he would first revoke Article 4.4 of the FIDE Charter.

If a motion is put before the General Assembly, I imagine that it could include a proposal to amend or suspend the Charter.
