I assume the change was because of the money generated by a world championship match

I assumed the same. Which may be the saviour here.

FIDE may prefer to give up one year extra on the cycle over giving up a World Rapid/Blitz championship event. I mean, what would be the point of either of those if those time controls - or something very close - were the way the actual World Championship was decided.

Whether a 3-year cycle but stick with classical time controls would be enough for Magnus (i suspect probably not) is another question.

Seems a bit much to change the rules or format to suit the whims of one player. Sure, if there were a consensus amongst the top players, but otherwise they would be changing the format every time a new champion emerged.

I don't know if anyone else followed the closing ceremony but it seemed a novel twist for each player to be presented with a bouquet of flowers by the FIDE director general along with a framed caricature.

It would also be very strange to change the format just for the world championship match when all the previous rounds have been played with normal time limits.

Again, has Carlsen *seriously* suggested the official WC being non-classical or is it just more "throwing ideas around" stuff.

FT
On Sunday Carlsen flew to Madrid for a 40-minute meeting with the Fide president, Arkady Dvorkovich, and the Fide director general, Emil Sutovsky. Sources said that Carlsen wants the world championship match format to switch to a mixture of classical, rapid and blitz games.

Any reports on whether anyone was with Carlsen at that meeting? 40 mins seems quite short, more like an opening gambit.

Well, in a way it already *is* given the existence of tie breaks.

I wonder what '...a mixture of classical, rapid and blitz games.' means

All he has to do is tie the match like he did v Caruana and Karjakin and he has that.

Is it Six Classical games, Six Rapid games, Six Blitz games or something along those lines?

(maybe the meeting was only 40 minutes long due to the queue at the
Real Madrid club shop when Magnus was picking up next seasons top.)

Excellent two-for-the-price-of-one there, combining a joke somebody had already made in the previous posting with one you'd already made on this thread

Hi Justin,

Took me a minute to see what you were on about.

Matt posted whilst I was reading the piece from the Financial Times.
If I had of spotted it I would not have added anything to it or given Matt
a nod and added to it. (Hi Matt)

Carlsen and the Real Madrid top is my running joke...I have three left...plus pictures!

Nobody speculating on what '...a mixture of classical, rapid and blitz games.' means.
How about 4 classical games, 2 rapid games and 4 blitz games.
4-2-4, which by chance is the formation Real Madrid will be using next season.
(I still have three to come, I just made that one up.)

It is a shame. Will FIDE behave like cricket and golf organizations and ban him?

Ban him from what?

He's completely within his rights to choose to abdicate his title, even if we may all wish he didn't.
