Today, at a press conference held in Delhi, Arkady Dvorkovich announced his intentions to run for reelection as FIDE President for a second term.
He also announced that five-time World Champion Vishy Anand will join his team.

That they facilited a motion yo that effect at the forthcoming Council meeting suggests the ECF Directors would like an endorsement of opposition to his reelection.

They might bear in mind that so far, the only other declared candidate is Stuart Fancy.

A London junior player of the early 1970s as I recall.

Why have we not yet heard from Geoff Chandler, who previously expressed an interest in challenging Kirsan? A runoff against the PNG ticket would not be without entertainment value.

Indeed. From what I recall, he was as popular then as he is now.

Last election was characterised as a contest between two main protagonists, a Greek with a dubious history in world chess and a Russian with a credible record in world football. There was then considerable anti-Russian sentiment and, while the ECF Board chose the former, the latter prevailed and now appears to be widely well-regarded. It's highly probable that Dvorkovich is the best man for the job but the question, now even more than in 2018, is whether his nationality disqualifies him. The statements I've seen attributed to him don't suggest any private enthusiasm for the Ukraine adventure but, even if that's so, it's a big ask to expect him to say so publicly.

I thought he stuck his neck out by saying "My thoughts are with Ukrainian civilians... Wars do not just kill priceless lives. Wars kill hopes and aspirations, freeze or destroy relationships and connections". This was in a piece which I think was previously cited on this forum.

Also, worth mentioning is that Dvorkovich was Deputy Prime Minister of Russia for six years.

Last time I threatened to run for president of FIDE this chap turned up in Edinburgh and asked me not to stand.

Could you let the uninitiated amongst us in on what this means please, David? I have no idea whether Stuart Fancy is popular or unpopular just now. I know the name but that is about it. Thanks.

I had no idea what David meant either. I know nothing of Mr Fancy but popularity or otherwise in the 1970s doesn't seem a great indicator of suitability for office in 2022.

I was being sarcastic.

Stuart Fancy was not popular in the early 1970s. He is not popular now.

I don't wish to elaborate. If he doesn't run for FIDE President, then least said, soonest mended. If he does run, there will be people better qualified than I to comment on his suitability or otherwise for the position.
