Nakamura playing a very impressive game today, even from my perspective as someone who would much prefer Aronian in the candidates.

Wins for MVL & Tabatabaei and draws elsewhere leave all players on 50% in Groups C & D.
I was thinking in such terms too but I think they are playing with three points for a win, so some on 50% are more equal than others. I don't remember Giri winning yet (no jokes!).

Has white won all the decisive games so far? (The absence of Rapport effect, perhaps).

Ah yes, good point! I watch on followchess which just has the normal scoring in their standings.

Wins for Oparin & Nakamura in Group A so Oparin in the lead.

If he qualifies after yesterday's adventures he's going to think his name's on the cup.

Mamedyarov also looked very good today, but unless I'm mistaken he can't qualify for the Candidates if Aronian wins Pool A or Nakamura comes second.

Perhaps not (I did say "I think"). I would be glad if they are not, I am no fan of it.

I can find no evidence for this, However, it really isn't as easy as it should be to discover what the rules are.

Now that Jonathan mentions it I remember 3 points for a win being talked about earlier in the Meltwater tour but not in the Gramd Prix.

That's probably it. I found a wikipedia page with the scores from the first two events and it was normal scoring in the pools.

Is no individual leading any pool then?

Oparin leads group A with 2.5

Dominguez and Shak have the same score in Group B

Everyone in C and D has 2

wiki

If you scroll down to the References at the end, number 5 gives you a link to the FIDE regulations; it is silent on points for a win, presumably because the default is 1 point for a win as in all other FIDE competitions?

GP standings

Shak reaches 16 if he wins this leg; Aronian 17 if he wins Group A and Naka 17 if he's second in Group A EDIT - if Naka were joint 2nd he'd be on 16 points

Rest day tomorrow gives you time to read all these

chess24 report

I was intrigued by the comment (I know this is off topic)
After losing to Levon in Round 1, this was almost a must-win game for Hikaru, and he was boosted by the fact his Twitch channel, that had suffered a 3-day ban for hosting a banned broadcaster, was operating again
Anyone know about this?

Earlyish news is that Aronian has absolutely murdered Esipenko's Ragozin (or Nimzo, depending on how you look at it) and has won already. Nakamura is also playing against the Nimzo and Oparian has pretty much full compensation for a pawn.

Domínguez is level against Mamedyarov's Open López. Dubov could still qualify if that game were drawn and he beat Keymer's Møller López but his piece sacrifice doesn't seem good enough for more than a draw.

MVL is worse against So in a 4 f3 López (Sämisch? Shirov?) and Predke is similarly struggling in a Symmetrical Three Knights English against Shankland.

Tabatabaei was plus two against Yu's Ragozin-cum-Sämisch Nimzo. If he converts he would lead the group should Vitiugov stay level against Giri's QGD - but as I write he misses the strongest move 15 and the evaluation ticks back to level.

So how's it going? Nakamura Man Of Destiny looks like he might pull one out of the bag again - Oparin, who freached move 40 with the computer indicating 0.00, has just offered an exchange of queens in the hope that the pawn-down bishop ending that would result is drawn, but the computer is minded to think otherwise, though it takes a while to come to that conclusion.

Domínguex and Mamedyarov drew and so to stay in it Dubov needs to win an ending where he has rook and five pawns against rook, bishop and one pawn. Keymer was briefly winning that game but was playing against the clock as well as Dubov.

Shankland won unproblematically and should be matched by So - MVL has been dead lost for quite a time now.

Vitiugov and Giri drew, while the battle on the other board ought to go to the Black pieces - which would put Yu ahead with a White game to finish with.
