Nigel Short in contention this weekend

Post by Leonard Barden » Sat Jan 08, 2022 3:46 pm

As this week's Guardian article reported https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2022/ ... r#comments
Nigel Short has rebounded from both Covid and the mobile phone episode (covered in a thread below) to share the lead with two rounds to go at the Vergani Cup in Italy.

Right now, as one of six co-leaders on 5.5/7, Nigel has on paper the easiest possible round 8 pairing, White against the 18-year-old Bulgarian woman champion. One of the other two all 5.5/7 pairings has already been drawn, and the engine gives Nigel an edge at move 16.https://www.chessbomb.com/arena/2022-ve ... va_Nurgyul

It should be interesting to follow what happens in the rest of the weekend. The ninth and final round starts at 9.30 am Sunday.

Excellent column as usual, Leonard.

I'm not sure that Covid will end up as a distant memory; more likely endemic as opposed to pandemic, but life carrying on much as usual, with sensible precautions taken.

Commentator's curse, unfortunately.

Nigel has always had a bit of a problem with playing the "fairer sex", going back to his junior days even.

Maybe he's not 'hard-wired' to face them.

Pantzar-Niemann from the same round in this tournament is amusing although not if you are Mr Pantzar who is a 2430 IM. If someone who knows how could post the game.

The game
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Good spot John, and good grief, how did this happen?

The time control was 90 for 40 then +15 mins with 30 second increment, which makes what happens from move 40 onwards even more shocking

Seeing that game reminds me of my abysmal technique in converting a queen v knight advantage in a LiChess 3/2 game although i did, at least, finally win  https://lichess.org/AI0TA5bJGzpO

I've done this so often; gone on the defensive when I should have been thinking about closing it out.

Or not, in the case of some miserable twats on this forum.

Yes - and please ban me. That will do me a big favour.
