Harry Grieve has just advanced to 5.5/7 at Roquetas, Spain, and looks nailed on for an IM norm. Does anybody know if he has previous norms?

If he does, they have not been lodged with FIDE.

Looks like round 8, now in progress, could be a problem as Grieve has misplayed the opening.

I'd never heard of his opponent, but it turns out that he is from Belgium, is just 16 years of age, and is already a GM, which puts English talents a little in the shade.....

That may be true, but 8.Be2 was clearly a prepared TN in his opponent's favourite opening, and he played several immediate moves thereafter.

Strange, then, that Grieve did not follow up his TN 8 Be2 by 9 Be3 which the engine rates as better for White.

He presumably has a better engine and left it running overnight.

The game was an interesting one to play through. Grieve's opponent (Dardha) sacrified his queen for a rook and a piece, and Grieve appeared to be better, but the game ended in a draw. Has Grieve got an IM norm yet, or does he need more (is it a nine-round tournament)?

Harry Grieve checkmated his round 9 opponent this morning and finished tied 1-3 with IMs Vrolijk (NED) and Kasden (NOR) on 7/9. That's possibly exceeding the IM norm by half a point.

Congratulations to the Cambridge University mathematics student and Varsity match captain from Guildford!
