Out of curiosity how many of the 10 players in the English Rapidplay are wearing masks?
Technically it's not the English Rapidplay Championship, it's an invitation event which the organiser has decided to call; the 'English Rapidplay'.

It looks clear enough from the ECF website that this is an official ECF event.

Are they doing well? Data on whether masks improve your chess would be of interest.

What’s the other seven’s exemption or legitimate excuse I wonder?

That they aren’t required to? Even if you believe that the new “plan B” rules require it (I’m not sure they do) plan B isn’t (yet) the law.

I don’t think there’s much argument that the convention centre isn’t one of the types of venues open to the public. I don’t think the rule change could be described as compulsory if when it passes through parliament this week it wouldn’t validate any enforcement actions taken from last Friday onwards. And there will have been enforcement actions taken, if perhaps not in the volume of the number of London transport non-mask fines.

I suspect in a few months time there might well have been a few chess events where the whole room more or less caught Omicron, so bending the rules not to wear a mask might then be considered a bit daft.
