Carlsen doesn't play the Petroff today, he must be playing for a win
Two Knights - he's taking the p!$$ :D Alas, Nepo misses the chance to bring the crowd to its feet by playing the exceedingly dull 4. d3.

What we needed was 4. Ng5 when I'm certain Carlsen was planning to play the Traxler (4...Bc5). It's long been my view that WC matches would be greatly improved if players were required to play the Traxler at least once in the match. The point being: even the most powerful computers explode when tasked with assessing the Traxler

Oi! Take that personally I do, you will be slagging off the 2c3 Sicilian next :)

And its anything but dull if Black follows up with 4.....d5 - that maybe shouldn't be expected in a WC match though ;)

I've had a lot of good games in the 4 d3 line (usually via transposition from 3...Bc5) though my theory is about a deacde and a half out of date - there's lots of a4 and a5 moves now, for reasons which are opaque to me.

4 Ng5 strikes me as precisely the sort of thing that would like fizzle out to a draw which Magnus would have prepared - which is one of the reasons people don't tend to choose the sharpest lines in these matches now, no?

Oh no... 23.g3 seems to ask for trouble.

Giri basically thinks he didn't want to come back tomorrow :) Very plausible in context to be honest.
(There being absolutely no way to play that position for a win as white.).

Might as well get it over and start thinking about the Candidates

Bizarre mistake - not because the tactics are easy to calculate, but you'd think you'd take a good long look at them unless you really think Magnus is just losing a pawn.

When he dropped the piece in the last decisive Giri immediately shouted something to the effect of him having lost his sense of danger. I haven't got the commentary on today but I wonder if he or anybody else has said the same.

They are saying that Nepo has cracked and that he shouldn't be remembered for the match. I maintain if he had played to his strengths instead of playing passive, solid chess, he would be better.

I could understand the two blunders in the other games - one can overlook Qa3+ and c6 as candidate replies in the respective games. But this is incomprehensible. If you play g3, you know that dxe3 followed by exf2+ is a possible reply and you are forced to consider it.

Its officially over.

Carlsen now having a lifetime plus score over Nepo in "proper" chess will be the cherry on top for him.

Quite easy as Giri was saying on comms - if you rule out a draw as effectively equal to a loss, which it was in match terms, then..... I don't blame Nepo one bit for not wanting to prolong things one more game.

Interesting to see how he goes in the candidates actually. As was also pointed out on comms, is he really going to feel thrilled at the idea of qualifying to play a repeat match after this experience? He just doesn't seem a spectacularly driven person which I have huge sympathy with.

Vishy won the Candidates when he seemed very relaxed about the outcome, but generally the Candidates is just very tough for anyone to win once, let alone twice
