"It might have been easier on the players to ask for first names instead "

I guess in such an event that "M" and "I" and a game number would do...

Do they have to turn the table round every day so the flags line up? ;)

(assuming the other side of the table has the same design on it with flags reversed)

I'm here! Flew in late on Saturday night.

Red Hot Pawn have sent me to cover the match. They agreed misunderstanding my phone call to the USA.
They thought I said the match was in Dunbar (approx 30 miles from Edinburgh) and not Dubai!
(I never knew the United Arab Emirates was actually a country, I thought it was a football team.)

Has the matter of the flags been resolved. Will the Russian flag be allowed on the board?

Chess24 with a great article by Anand and Kramnik on the match. Couple of quotes from it:

Anand “If I knew how to beat Magnus I would have done it myself!”

Anand: "I think the most important thing first is that Nepo’s style is somehow incompatible with Magnus’, in the sense that for Magnus it’s not easy to lock into this style… [Nepo]’s the only one who has the ability to get this tactical style against Magnus."

Kramnik "...preparation is very important. We don’t know anything about how they prepare, what they prepare, and I think the beginning of the match, the first few games, maybe 3-4 games, will be very important, because it’s difficult. I remember when playing my first match with Garry [Kasparov] you’re under pressure, and if things start to go wrong anything can happen.

For me the first two games were very important, that I started to take the lead. Even the first game that I drew… Slowly I started to feel like, yeah, I’m just a very valid and serious opponent of the World Championship match. Frankly I was not totally sure about it before the match, so for the challenger it is important after the start of the match to get the feeling that you are in, that you are as valid, I would say as valuable, a player in the match as the World Champion. It’s somewhere deep inside you, and if it goes wrong you might start to be shaky.

Even if you make four draws, you lose game five, it’s easier. It’s ok, you are in the fight already, so maybe the first 2-3 games in my opinion might be very important, and if Ian manages those games without too much damage, then yeah, he will get his confidence and then it will be more difficult already for Magnus."

Interesting quotes, they would know

TWIC
The FIDE World Chess Championship takes place in Dubai, UAE, 24th November (opening ceremony - game 1 on 26th Nov) until 16th December. The match is between World Champion Magnus Carlsen and his Challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi. The match will be over 14 games rather than the recent 12 and uses an accelerated schedule to accommodate this - a final day of rapid and blitz tie-breaks will take place on 15th December in the event of a 7-7 tie.

Here's what they are playing to win:

"The FIDE World Championship Cup Dubai 2021 is made of 925 sterling silver with 999 gold plating, dolerite, and obsidian. The item is set with 39 pearls and a diamond. The trophy weighing more than 5 kilograms was presented for the first time at Expo 2020 Dubai. The design of the cup was provided by FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich. The cup was created by masters of the Chamovskikh jewellery house with the support of the Sverdlovsk Region Chess Federation represented by its president Andrey Simanovsky, owner of SIMA-LAND company."

Chess24 is now showing Nepo as playing White in Game 1.

Where is there a report of the opening ceremony and draw for colours?

It's on Facebook live right now. They chose the colours by popping balloons. https://www.facebook.com/watch?v=1486713545043148

I don't patronise the evil Facebook. Is it on a respectable website?

There's a video in the chess24 report of the press conference

Chess34 also has a preview, the already mentioned Anand-Kramnik thoughts, and an interview with Magnus

Not a nit-pick but a big Thank You.

I was struggling for the title of another chess site if I need one to quote where I was getting my world title news from.
(see above, some people actually think I'm in Dubai! - I'll come home around about game 2. )

Your wee finger slip has it. Change Chess24 to Chess42 (a nod to Hitchhikers Guide.) Then, to be safe, I googled it.

There is a Chess42 chess playing app ($0.99 from the app store.)

Chess94 (as in page 94 for Private Eye) is an online chess club.

But there is no (as yet) Chess34. (if you google it it hits on Chess24 which is perfect. )

At the moment chess34 it is. Thanks Again.

Apologies for inserting this question here but I have only just watched the opening day events on-line and am a bit puzzled by one of the questions and the answers given. Could someone please explain again why the length of the match has been increased to 14? Don't get me wrong, I think it's great but I couldn't quite understand the comments made to the press.

Thanks

And if I may ask also, why do we have screens separating the players from the audience at the venue now? It seems to be the trend nowadays. How did this come about?

I would suggest it's to avoid any suggestions that someone in the audience was able to signal the players.

Drama as the Chess24 board shows 14...Rfc8 for some minutes before being corrected to 14...Rfb8
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."
