Very promising start to the match with both players looking for complex play

Oh boy, just imagine if one of the players caught it -the problems that would cause!

Breyer rhymes with "drier", I never knew

It would in German, and I suppose in his day he was in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. My Hungarian is not good enough to say...
As it relates to Ruy Lopez, I always thought that "Ruy" was pronounced "Roo-ee", but have heard people saying "Rye". Spanish insight would be welcome.

Re: Carlsen v Nepomniatchi 2021 World Championship
Never really enjoyed any live chess match commentary, usually I stay on chessgames.com where there is no sound,
no computer evo and I can block anyone who splatters computer junk on the screen during the game. (I have the power!)
but their site of late has been having severe technical issues.
So yesterday I gave Giri and Judit a try and was very impressed and stayed with them for most of the day. Excellent.
I tried the UK team (chess24) a few times but must have kept hitting their break. They were zooming around
the venue in a golf cart telling everyone how great it was or were off chatting to people doing their shopping.
But decided to give them another try today. (surely the must talk the about game sometimes)
Very entertaining and the format is chess, chess chess with an out of the studio roving reporter. It works.
I knew Simon would be good but this was this first time I gave David Howell a good run. A good match up that pair.
If chessgames cannot fix their problems I'll be back there.
Edit: Chessgame are now showing:
Chessgames.com will be unavailable Monday, November 29, 2021 for maintenance. We apologize for this inconvenience.
I think that might be '...unavailable till Monday, November 29, 2021'

I think I once wrote a piece suggesting it would be useful to have a web page giving the correct pronunciation of names in chess, after having found out I seemed to have been mispronouncing Topalov for years. Not that I'm proposing to compile such a page myself.Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Sun Nov 28, 2021 3:32 pm"Breyer rhymes with "drier", I never knew"

I'm doing an instant report on the games. I usually feed a link to chessgames.com (I was asked too)
But they have gone to bed. so lucky you!
Last report I saw from chessgames was them pleading to please stop using the on site computer to analyse game 3.
I of course was not guilty but having seen the message I (and do doubt everyone else) wondered why not?
so we all tried to activate the on site computer and blew something up.

Re: Carlsen v Nepomniatchi 2021 World Championship
I was looking at it earlier in connection with the 1993 title match, given that the 8 a4 Anti-Marshall which we saw today played a very prominent role back then.
As I recall (from today, rather than from 28 years ago) it was played three times, in games 1, 3 and 7, Kasparov winning all three, the first time against 8...b4 and the subsequent two against 8...Bb7. Kasparov then changed tack, playing 1 d4 or the Scotch, and didn't play the Lopez again until game 19 when Short tried 4...d6.
I was discussing this with a friend who wondered what Short would have done, had Kasparov persisted with the Lopez earlier, as one might have expected him to do with three wins out of three.

You should try the Speelwolf channel on Lichess. GM-quality analysis (as you would expect) from an intelligent and humorous individual. So far as I can see, the only British GM commenting.Geoff Chandler wrote: ↑Sun Nov 28, 2021 3:37 pmNever really enjoyed any live chess match commentary, usually I stay on chessgames.com where there is no sound,

Nigel was completely outclassed in those anti-Marshalls. Kasparov simply understood those positions better.
