The thing with Ian figuring out which white game he might try for a win, is that he also has his black games to contend with, and if Magnus gets a sniff in those games he is definitely going to go for it. After a short draw yesterday I sense that Magnus will see game 8 today as an opportunity to virtually wrap the match up.
Worth noting though that Nepo's best clear chances of wins so far have been with black. If Carlsen continues to push then that may continue to be so. It is a major difference though that tiebreaks are considered potentially far more dangerous ground for him than in the previous two matches. Whether that is an incentive to push (to finish off the match) or to play relatively safe to preserve the lead i'm not sure.

His only chance is to go 'va banque' with White.
A stray thought, does one "go va banque" or just "va banque"?

One for the pedants.

Pop quiz: which world champion complained of which famous international tournament that on playing days, the competitors had to do without their dinner?
Fairly certain it would be Hastings. Sealed move at 7 p.m. and resumption at 8.30 or 9 p.m.? For the world champion I guess Smyslov, but it could just as well be Botvinnik, Tal or Karpov.

<sad trombone noise> That's not the answer on the card I'm afraid

I can imagine various people not counting pea soup as a dinner at Wijk aan Zee. Presumably that is another blank though, since the question specified "playing days"

I would speculate that it was sometime in the 1920s or 1930s - Capablanca? Given that the whole reason adjournments were introduced in the first place (might have even been Nottingham 36?) was to actually allow a break for dinner. The concept of games being played over multiple days etc came much later.

"Has anybody else been experiencing problems with Chess24 over the last two days? The site not loading, the moves freezing, that kind of thing?"

A bit - someone seems to have been thinking for 40 minutes, you "refresh" and suddenly you're 5 moves later...
Today for instance, although I have the Polgar/Giri commentary, and eight moves have been played according to Chessbomb, there are no moves showing on Chess24 at all. (EDIT: they have since appeared.)

On paper, it could have been the London Chess Classic where the main event started play at 4 pm. But there's no shortage of late night eateries in the Kensington area let alone London as a whole.

Timings of British one round a day tournaments were influenced by the desire to have something to report to the press with an early evening deadline and the meal times of boarding houses and small hotels which were often in the 7pm to 8pm slot.

Looks like Nepo was not well prepared for this simple position, and it has the potential to go very wrong.

In today's game a symmetric position from the Petroff. chessbomb Stockfish suggests a number of slightly worse next moves, none of which are Castles.

Well this....h5 push from Nepo is certainly interesting!

It certainly cuts out White's Qh5 ideas, which were looking dangerous.
