Is Magnus actually his real name? I thought it was Sven.

He is actually Sven Magnus Carlsen. People using their "middle" name isn't that uncommon.

Perhaps so but their reasons for that may differ greatly. Has he ever said why he prefers to be known as Magnus?

The third name there is his mother's former surname IIRC.

Yes but what is the reason, since they often do differ. Do we actually know why Mr. Carlsen prefers to be called Magnus?

Interesting. Thanks for that.

Does anyone follow Ivanchuk's Twitch stream (is it in Ukrainian)?

Looks interesting. Is the chess content of Twitch something not to be missed?

I have now had time to read in full the excellent piece by Peter Wells (Justin, you gave a link to the ECF website - is that something Wells has published through the ECF or was it published elsewhere first?).

I wasn't aware, until reading that piece, of the following, which I will quote from what Wells wrote:
Peter Wells wrote:Magnus didn’t wait long after his celebrations to drop a bombshell. [...] he may elect not to defend his title next time. This was not, he hastened to add, an announcement of retirement but rather a refocussing on a new goal – to be the first player to reach 2900.
:!:

I am going to go and look for some more on this, but has it been discussed here anywhere?

That got widespread coverage at the time, and was certainly discussed on here.

My view was and is that people were maybe taking what might well have been somewhat throwaway comments a bit too seriously.

Kramnik
The level of play before games 7-8 was pretty good. A real World Championship match in all senses. Then one player just stopped playing, basically. He was playing parts of the games well, but then just collapsed.

Magnus played well in the second part of the match, but again, it’s easier to play well when you are comfortable with +1 and there is a good chance that your opponent will collapse. Magnus has delivered more difficult things than this.
