oh la la! Suppose France win 2.5-1.5 and Ukraine win 3-1. Who wins? Do we need the help of Jack?

unexpected gift in Zoe Varney's game means that England women should at least not lose.

Adam Bremner's advantage has slipped from plus fives and sixes to plus two and a bit (after Black's 23rd).
And the downward curve continued

Meanwhile Lee Davis seemed to be doing pretty well against Hovhannisyan, given Black's ranked 487 points above him, but appears to have just dropped a pawn (White's 28th).
This one was a shame: Lee got it back and was level (according to the computer) at the break, but immediately went wrong and wasn't given another chance.

Chess24 tells us that France would win gold, and this is now the expected outcome

Apparently Firouzja has crossed 2800 6 months younger than Magnus did.

not a bad day for England. women about to win a match they had seemed more likely to lose, and there can be no complaints about England men losing to Russia by just one point. Luke has not been at his best this event but he has certainly defended like a forty year old.

In the end both men and women teams turned into one person teams* (Gawain and Toma). I think that Zoe was the only other person in either team to win more than once. Tough old event ...

* with all due respect for Luke's heroic defending

I don't imagine she was expecting to read that after losing her first four games. Hugely impressive bounceback.

I think that the fact that Zoe contributed the same number of points to England victories (two of them crucial) and gained the most rating points in the team, makes this analysis a bit of a stretch in relation to the women.

Yes, and Shohreh scored two wins and three draws - having evidently been influenced by Luke's style in doing so.

fair enough. generally the women deserve credit for winning their last three matches. Toma stands out for me, perhaps that's all.

Thank you ladies . 3 wins in the last 3 matches. Great pleasure for all of us.

K.Toma brilliant 4/4 on the board one, debutante Z.Varney 3/3 and S.Bayat 2/3 .

All together 3 wins - ISL, SUI and NOR and no one of them was outsider. NOR won with SRB ( SRB finished the 6th !) . SUI won with SLO1 and CRO . The best ISL performance was a win with TUR .

L.Head 0,5/6 - she is a player with highest difference between her rating and average rating of her opponents which was + 177 . This criterion for K.Toma is +33, for Z.Varney +53 and for S.Bayat just +6.
Who remembered L.Head's performance from 2018 - her WIM norm result with Rp 2382 ( she was just 18 points under WGM norm limit) !! :

knows, she plays nowadays significantly below her abilities and she is able to have them very very high! She is not now there, where she was in 2018 and +177 was currently a great enemy for her performance.

I'm not totally sure if I have understood you correctly but as a friend and past coach of Louise I certainly don't think it fair to say " she plays nowadays significantly below her abilities" This is one tournament where she has played on a very high board and understandably has found it difficult as would any other player of a comparable rating. She is a twice English women's champion and I expect her to remain an important part of the England team in the future, "form is temporary, class is permanent"

Meanwhile Scotland have gone down 1.5-2.5 to North Macedonia
Yes - that was unfortunate - it seemed all three possible results were possible until late on. Good to see Alan break his duck - he's having a tough tournament (cares of captaincy weighing heavily?) but he did well to spot and take his chance late on to save a difficult position. Adam did well to get the draw after being a pawn down for a lot of the game, Graham always seems comfortable at this level, but I fear Freddy, having been presented with a chance when his opponent went for the win, pushed the wrong pawn.
I am curious to know how the massive age difference within the Scottish team is being managed (curious, nothing other than that).
Good to see Freddy gained 114 points. Scotland look like they really have a special talent here.

And the player who according to some shouldn't have been in the England Women team anyway, got 0.5 as well (out of 5)

Bound to make some wonder if nobody better was available.
