A draw on board 1 which gives Firouja a place in the Candidates.

A win for Oparin (who I know very little about) would guarantee him a place and require Caruana to win to deny Firouja.
It will be interesting to see if he turns down a draw offer if one is made.
So that's this answered.

Meanwhile this is looking like a plausible scenario.

Yu has a better tiebreak than Caruana so might sneak into the Candidates if he wins (although he's playing MVL) and Caruana doesn't.

I think a final GM norm for Elizabeth Paehtz with her last round win.

I was wondering about that; hope so, as she's been very close this tournament

We could yet have the traditional Buchholz excitement of watching some ending in the lower half of the draw deciding who makes it to the Candidates.
Grandelius looks about to win against Bluebaum, which should give Caruana a decisive tiebreak advantage. Yu will be cheering for Keymer to reply by beating Howell - but of course he must also win himself.

I don't understand why Stockfish thinks David is better, but I hope it's right.

Yu - MVL is drawn; I assume that means Caruana only needs a draw

Caruana confirmed as the second qualifier then?

If so, it becomes even more mystifying why Howell is playing on.

He might need a win here to qualify for the Grand Prix; I haven't checked the tie-break statuses.

Top 2 are in the Candidates; next 6 qualify for the Grand Prix

Howell was 10th after round 10, so a draw presumably keeps him out of the top 8, whereas a win gets him in the Grand Prix; Keymer was 7th, so presumably a draw gets him in the Grand Prix

I started following this game, to see in Madagascar's finest could score a win at the last: it's not over yet, but it seems that in an extremely difficult and no doubt instructive opposite coloured ending with two pawns to none, he was winning but went astray at a relatively early stage (or so Nalimov tells me, the Chess24 and Chessbomb somputers are not to be relied upon here) and that win isn't coming back.

I was pleased to see that Jesse February, on 0/10 in the women's section, got off the mark today albeit she may be a bit frustrated not to have won.
