Fide online Olympiad August-September 2021-British Isles teams triumph!

Post by Leonard Barden » Sun Aug 29, 2021 4:35 pm

The second 150-team Fide online Olympiad seems to be under the radar in this Forum, but we shouldn't fail to congratulate Scotland, Ireland (both group winners) and Wales who all today qualified among the top three in their sections and thus gain promotion to Division 2 to be played on 2-4 September. A true British Isles triumph...

Ireland's strength was on the female boards where WIM Trisha Kanyamarala, 16, and Lara Putar,14, scored a combined total of 13.5/14. For Scotland, Andrew Greet had 5.5/6, Keti Arakhamia-Grant 6/6 and 11-year-old Freddy Gordon 5/5 on the under-20 board. Wales had a team success when they edged out their rating rivals Angola in a decisive match.

England play in the top division on 8-10 September, with the target a place in the final knock-out stages. However, there is an issue: David Howell and Jovanka Houska are part of the commentary team for Norway Chess 2021 which starts (with both Carlsen and Nepo playing) on 7 September.

There is only one country from which two arbiters have been appointed: England. Congratulations to Alex Holowczak (Chief Arbiter) and to Shohreh Bayat.

Scotland also features prominently, with Andy Howie being both a Principal on the Fair Play Panel and the Disconnection Resolution Officer, a new position. Congratulations to him also. I hope that he doesn't have much to do in the latter role.

With the rules saying it's the player's responsibility to ensure the entire Internet is working properly apart from "the Chess.com play server", I imagine his challenge in the latter role will be determining what the rules mean by "the Chess.com play server", as that's not a well-defined term when chess.com is running on a cloud provider's platform.

The day has now arrived when Ireland, Scotland and Wales have to test themselves in Division 2, in which there are some strong teams. For details please see http://chess-results.com/tnr576505.aspx?lan=1 and click on the other links.

Ireland play in Pool A starting at 0900 each day. This enables some of their players to play in the Online Olympiad in the mornings and in the European Individual Championship in the afternoons, as mentioned in the thread about the Championship.

Wales play in Pool B starting at 1100; Scotland play in Pool C starting at 1300.
