Anyway if you think that's controversial check out events in São Paolo this afternoon
If four famous Argentinian footballers really did try to claim that they had come from Venezuela, I'd say they were pushing their luck.
If you want a picture of the future, imagine a QR code stamped on a human face — forever.

The Argentinian football authorities didn't know? The Brazilian football authorities didn't know? [Edit] And also the people running the tournament? [/Edit]

Anyway I note that Gawain drew in the last round, finished in 70th poisitons and lost more than 25 rating points, which is quite a spectacular disaster for a top seed in any tournament.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Can someone explain to me the draw on board 1 where Demchecnko (Black) willingly gave up the exchange for a pawn and White acquiesed to a draw. Seems a bit strange.

Deac, Bogdan-Daniel (ROU) - Demchenko, Anton (RUS)
European Individual Championship - Reykjavik Open 2021 round 11
½-½

I don't see a good way for black to avoid giving up the exchange and presumably white felt that black had sufficient compensation/was happy with a draw to qualify?
There were 23 qualifying places, so presumably Deac already had secured one of those even if he lost

Details of the qualifiers are in the final round report

Possibly about prize money then. Deac is young (under 20) and there were two people taking the top two spots and Deac and Sarana took fourth and third on 8/11. There were then 14 players on 7.5 points and 19 players on 7 points (with 14 players on 7 points missing out on the qualification places, unless you take already qualified people into account?).

You have to mostly go down to the 90s in terms of placement before you find the young up-and-coming FMs and sub-2400 ratings. Edmund Player is around there as well.

Aleksandr Domalchuk-Jonasson, an U18 Ukrainian rated 2052 gained a massive 104 rating points (drawing with a GM and beating an IM and drawing with 2 FMs and beating one of the highly-rated Millikow brothers - I don't think Domalchuk-Jonasson got a norm as the rating performance wasn't enough, but still highly impressive). Some Icelandic players did very well in terms of rating as well.
