Which proves my point. 'Dead draw' it may be, but it's not exactly trivial.

So this position, if it is Black to move, he loses, but White to move it is a draw?

Ah, I see. Black has to move to g7 at the right moment. So Black's king will go via d7 and e7 to be on f7 at the point White has set up Kf4 and g4. And then Black exchanges on g4 and then keeps the opposition over there, only going to g7 when White puts his king on g5. That's much clearer now, thanks!

Good example of the distant opposition. If from the position above, White goes 1.Kd4 Kd7 2.Kc3 than Black has to play 2...Kc7 (keeping the distant opposition) rather than the losing 2...Kc6.

It's all about the opposition. White has no triangulation manoeuvre to gain it.

A good example of a position which looks trivial on a computer screen, but is actually very difficult when the brain is frazzled from hours of defending a structural inferiority.

In Round 7 Rauf Mamedov drew quickly with Piorun which allowed one of the chasing pack, Anton Demchenko (below), to draw level with him with a nice positional game against Donchenko on 6/7.

Based on the game score posted below, this claim would appear to be inaccurate :)

I think you are getting your Mamedov's mixed up Matt. In Round 6 Rauf Mamedov beat Lagarde as Black. In Round 7 Nidjat Mamedov beat him as White!

I can't find anything to suggest they are and it looks like they just share the same surname. However, while I was looking around I noticed that a player (unnamed) had tested positive for Covid so has withdrawn and two other players (also unnamed) have gone into quarantine.

I'm fairly certain they're brothers, I remember them from World/Euro Youth events and lost to Nidjat somewhere.

The discussion on Nidjat's chessgames.com page suggests that they are not closely related.

My friend from Azerbaijan confirmed they are not related, and that Mamedov is a very common surname.

Rd 8 results and a draw on top board between the two leaders, Rauf Mamedov and Demchenko, left an opportunity for the chasing pack to catch them. It was Keymer who grabbed his chance with a win as Black over Navara to join the other two leaders on 6.5/8:

Navara, David (CZE) - Keymer, Vincent (GER)
European Individual Championship - Reykjavik Open 2021 round 08

Gawain drew (4.5), Lorin (4) and Edmund (3) lost.

Further to the post above on the positive Covid case the organisers issued an official statement:

"After round three we were approached by a player who expressed that he had symptoms of Covid-19. He went through all the necessary tests and was declared by the doctors as a positive case. As consequence, everyone who was in contact with him was examined by the tracing team of the Icelandic Directorate of health and the chief epidemiologist of Iceland. Following that, it was decided that two other players had to be put in quarantine as a safety measure for the players involved and for every other participant. The players were informed verbally as well as in written form by the decision of the Directorate of health in Iceland. The players’ respective chess federations were also informed."

We wish everyone a safe tournament and the affected players all the best in these unfortunate circumstances."

Round 9 pairings top boards:

1 GM Keymer Vincent (2602) 6½ 6½ GM Mamedov Rauf (2654)
2 GM Demchenko Anton (2597) 6½ 6 GM Romanov Evgeny (2594)
