Ah, the offbeat line against the Sicilian that Carlsen popularised a few years ago.

Re: Amusing miniature from Russian Premier League
Thanks, Reg, nice one to remember.
If Black had played instead 17...Bxg3 he would have lasted two moves longer: 18 hxg3+ Kg4 19 Kf2 g5 and now either 20 Rh3 or Be2 with a mate by retreating the knight next move.
7...e5 is known but Black usually plays 11...Nf6 or 11...f5. In the few games where this line with 11 Ba3 occurred Black almost always chose 11...Nge7 but I found a 2020 blitz game with 11...Kg7 where White also won quickly but not quite so elegantly.

It's hard to guess what the ratings of these players are.

I looked up black, he is 2400. I guess he just missed Ne8 when he went Bf4. It is a great miniature though.

I am puzzled as to why anyone would ever play 11...Kg7 instead of 11...Nge7, surely Black is fine after the latter, and just losing after the former?

A miscalculation somewhere, either Ne8+ or something later on. The whole stranding the white knight on g7 thing isn't precisely intuitive!Christopher Kreuzer wrote: ↑Wed May 12, 2021 2:13 amI am puzzled as to why anyone would ever play 11...Kg7 instead of 11...Nge7, surely Black is fine after the latter, and just losing after the former?
Kg7 is a very natural move to want to make - the knight wants to be on f6 I guess.
