Magnus Carlsen Invitational 2021, 13-24 March

Post by Mick Norris » Thu Mar 11, 2021 8:39 am

TWIC
The format has been tweaked for this major, the field has been increased from 12 to 16, in the first major 8 of the 12 players made it through to the second phase and this lead to a lot of caution being rewarded. Players: Magnus Carlsen, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Levon Aronian, Anish Giri, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Wesley So, Teimour Radjabov, Alireza Firouzja, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Sergey Karjakin, Hikaru Nakamura, Daniil Dubov, Jorden van Foreest, David Anton plus two of these four: Nils Grandelius, Max Warmerdam, Alan Pichot and Aryan Tari who play in a qualifier.

TWIC day 2 report
The final day should be very exciting with only 8 of the 16 players going through to the KO stage. It looks to me that 7 players are chasing just 4 places if we take it the top 4 in the standings are pretty much there.

Round 10 Standings: 1st Giri 8pts, 2nd Carlsen 7.5pts, 3rd-4th So, Nakamura 6.5pts, 5th-6th Firouzja, MVL 6pts, 7th-9th Aronian, Dubov, Karjakin 5pts, 10th-11th Nepomniachtchi, Radjabov 4.5pts, 12th-13th Mamedyarov, Grandelius 4pts, 14th Van Foreest 3pts, 15th Anton Guijarro 2.5pts, 16th Pichot 2pts.

Final day starts at 4pm GMT Monday 15th March.

That'll teach me to make a comment about the inevitable Carlsen-So final during game 3

Nepo seems to have missed a couple of reasonably straightforward chances to put Carlsen out in game three
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."
