Karjakin is very hard to knockout in this format; I'm hoping Fedoseev manages to do so
But it was not to be
Yes, having reached more semi-finals than anyone else, he's now reached more finals too

So, Karjakin again in the Candidates
He has got there on merit.

Peter Svidler has just puzzled some viewers by announcing "this is proper squeaky bum time".

Playing some really quite fine games with white on the way too!

Magnus has what looks (28 moves as I write) like an Advance French gone wrong, though it is in fact a Sicilian

Sesse thought Magnus was busted after 38...Qxf1 and is usually right about these things.

Duda had it, and then he didn't.

EDIT: but wait...

Congratulations to Duda: first ever qualifier for the Candidates under a POL flag.

Well done Duda; good to see him in the Candidates; let's hope he wins the final

I see the final (and 3rd place playoff) is tomorrow and Thursday, with tiebreaks Friday; it is normally 4 games in the final, wonder why they have gone for only 2 this time, might be because of the extra round at the start

Duda's live rating now 2750, with 2801 for Rapid and 2792 for blitz

Magnus must be regretting offering him a lift earlier in the tournament.

Sure but understanding the nature of his loss is much harder. He played a quiet line and then didn't do anything on the kingside, and conceded space on the queenside which went on to cost him the game. Hard to understand why it went the way it did.

I would say that unlike almost every other match that Carlsen has played he didn't 'know' he was going to win. He had been outplayed so far in the match, so he viewed this as his chance - keep it tight in the centre, launch a big kingside attack and hope for the best. That is not the sort of approach we associate with any champion, but particularly Carlsen and he paid the price. The next time he faces Duda will be interesting.

That was what I thought too - it was the way I would have played, which is not a good advertisement for a World Champion. It looked as though the attack never even got started, but the black king was completely undefended by pieces so maybe it would have gone very fast if it had.

Duda did say in the interview afterwards that he was genuinely concerned about a kingside attack but the thing I find hard to understand is what winning chances Carlsen had if he didn't launch one. Seemed like the decision not to go all out on the kingside cost him dearly.
