- Germany is one of 6 countries where Brits can go to without quarantine either way. (This constantly changes and players from the North may now need a test when going to Germany). It is very uncertain whether Germany will stay lenient with UK arrivals.
- The Heidelberg tournament is a 4 day, 7 round event, fide rated, 90/40+30+30 per move from the 29th of October to November 1st. These dates are compatible with half term for juniors.
- 2 sections: over and under 1700 (flexibility possible)
- In the words of the organisers, the measures include "Our hygiene measures are among others: Masks compulsory, data collection, reduced number of participants, only two people are allowed on the toilet and a one-way system."
- Details here with Google translate: https://translate.googleusercontent.com ... Av9KDH2g9w
- Participants here: https://chess-results.com/tnr535087.aspx?lan=1. Already 150+ participants, up to IM level.
- Flights to Frankfurt look reasonable cheap.
- Heidelberg seems a nice destination to visit, but the tournament is in a suburb.

I assume "at the same time" is missing. Probably to prevent overcrowding in the toilets.

Website update with 2 pieces of info :
Flight from UK is currently clear if not coming from: Northern Ireland, Scotland, North East England, North West England, Yorkshire and the Humber, Wales
and Midlands.
You can still go with a test. Not sure where to get a fast private test though and at what cost.
If the contaminations level hold for another 10 days, I'll probably take my son there.
and (google translate)193 pre-registrations, maximum attendees 200.
Thank you for your trust
Not sure what this all means, apart that it seems to be going ahead, and players can even play if coming from risk area as long as they show proof of a negative test of <48 hours.News about the development in connection with the Corona:
A decision will be made on Thursday:
It is currently clear which Corona regulation will be used. On Thursday I get an answer from the state BaWu (???)
It is now clear: All participants who come from a risk area need a negative corona test that is not older than 48 hours to participate

The FCO says you can "take a test directly on arrival - there are facilities to provide such testing operating at airports and major transport hubs", but it also says "A negative test may exempt you from the 14-day self-isolation requirement, but you should note that some German states require a second negative test before granting an exemption from quarantine".

Thanks Wadih. It's tempting, but I guess the chances must be quite high of London being added to the risk areas

A body blow for many, no doubt, but I am managing to hold my head high.

Careful, Tim. I made a similar comment on the BBC website below a story about Scotland threatening to keep us out and earned an official warning for hate speech.Tim Spanton wrote: ↑Mon Oct 19, 2020 10:54 pmA body blow for many, no doubt, but I am managing to hold my head high.

The whole UK is now in the "risk" category for entry into Germany.
Couldn't they have waited one more week?
Now I have to figure out if private testing waives the quarantine, and whether it is worth the inconvenience and the ridiculous cost.

I'd be very surprised if private testing did that - there's quite a large false negative rate on the current tests

Here's hoping it gets sorted out before:

Germany and others do accept private tests. I think they need a certain accuracy rate. This excludes antibody tests I think, and must be the nasal swab antigen test.MartinCarpenter wrote: ↑Thu Oct 22, 2020 9:11 amI'd be very surprised if private testing did that - there's quite a large false negative rate on the current tests
The main issues are:
You need it to be 48 hours old max, but some companies need up to 72 hours to produce.
Test sites are quite inconvenient to reach and often in central London.
They cost nearly as much as the entire trip (Germany is relatively cheap to go to).
I am waiting for today's organisers update, then check what the Lander requires. I'll then need to make a call quite quickly if we try to go for a test or give it a pass.
Thing is my son was telling me yesterday he really hoped we could go to the tournament...
