TWIC day 5 report
Magnus Carlsen was given a very hard time by Vasyl Ivanchuk being beaten with black in Game 1 and being under pressure in game 3. Ivanchuk also had a decent advantage in the final Armageddon but once he ran short of time Carlsen took over and won the game. Carlsen thus dropped his first point and this allowed Ian Nepomniachtchi to catch him after he defeated Peter Svidler.
Round 5 standings: 1 Carlsen 14pts, 2 Nepomniachtchi 14pts, 3 Kramnik 10pts, 4 Svidler 9pts, 5 Giri 8pts, 6 Gelfand 6pts, 7 Ivanchuk 5pts, 8 Leko 4pts, 9 Ding Liren 3pts, 10 Anand 2pts,

Round 6 Sunday 26th July 2020

TWIC day 7 report
Ivanchuk has a record of becoming very motivated against Vladimir Kramnik and today was no exception, he beat the former World Champion comfortably 3-1 even after losing the third round game
Is there a reason for this?

Is it even true? Looking at Mega Database 2020 it looks dead level on wins between the two of them. Unless its simply a throwaway comment based on one game Kramnik lost to Ivanchuk in London.

Ivanchuk was strangely motivated in the London candidates, yes that's the one I remember too, but I'd not noticed any other examples

They had a game at an Olympiad several years ago where I can remember Ivanchuk being very upset when he only drew after pushing for a win with black. I think they kept the camera on him for several minutes afterwards, first as he sat in despair at the board, then as he wandered around the room which was a bit unfair.

Kramnik actually has a clear lead over Ivanchuk in classical chess alone, though Chucky makes up the gap in rapid/blitz/online encounters.

Nepomniachtchi frustrated Carlsen in Games one and three with excellent and resourceful defence but Carlsen did bring home the full point in game two. This victory was one of the very best games of the entire event.

No idea if anyone's watching, or if anyone cares, but Carlsen has just blasted Nepo clean out of his socks to win the Final 2 - 0 in sets. That said, Nepo did roll up Carlsen yesterday in a 21-move slaughter. But you got the impression Carlsen was just messing. Nepo twice punted 6 Rg1 in a Najdorf. What are things coming too?

"No idea if anyone's watching, or if anyone cares"

I was! Very impressed the other day when they were studying a position and Karpov suggested sacrificing a rook and gave a long line showing it won, Grischuk and Judit Polgar were also impressed. There were also questions whether Karpov was sitting in the Czar's palace or his own house...
