They would have to be some pretty strong merits, probably expanding beyond the specifics of the incident (bias in the appeals panel or something). You can’t have teams just withdrawing from events of this type whenever they feel hard done by. What’s the point of appeals processes/committees if competitors don’t agree to abide by their decisions? In fact I’m surprised such a stipulation wasn’t a condition of entry.

Wouldn’t be surprised if FIDE take further measures as a result.

I see. So, if a man or woman were required, a country could still choose which man or which woman to play - and could they choose between all four men or all four women, or just those who played in the original macthes?

I think you may have misinterpreted "The Armenian team will not be charged for presenting this appeal."

They lost the appeal for which a fee is normally payable. In this case it was felt that the appeal was justified and so that fee would be returned/not levied.

I do not think you can read into that whether or not further action will be taken for the withdrawal which would certainly not have been known about at the time of the appeal decision.

All 4 I think; Hungary chose their board 2 Banusz against Wagner as you know, so there's obviously some flexibility

Let's just have a look at the Poland - Azerbaijan Armageddon again from a different angle. At the end Socko got up obviously pleased leaving the Azerbaijan lady staring in disbelief.

Russia win their first match 3.5-2.5 against the USA although it was looking like 3-3 with Shankland two pawns up in an ending against Dubov.

That’s a fair point.

Although i think in most sports, refusal to accept the decisions of the organising authorities might trigger charges of bringing the sport into disrepute or similar. Especially where the disagreement is with decisions enacted by the highest authorities possible. Sometimes even when said authorities recognise that sympathy is likely to rest with the complaining parties, and they might ideally prefer to take the easy route.

I guess this might not happen here because chess is still feeling its way in the online world and there are no easy answers to the disconnection problem, and FIDE feel that they can play it down without it being seen as a clear challenge to their authority. But will tighten regulations for future events so any repeat will not be tolerated.

Looking at it from the other side, it would have been an impressive comeback from the USA to grab the draw if they had won that game in addition to salvaging the draw in Episenko v Xiong.

Some of the Polish team have also been playing in their over the board team event (started on Tuesday) on the same day as the Olympiad. Those playing in both events include Wojtaszek & Socko who have played in all four rounds including rounds 2-4 on the days of the preliminery, quarter and semi final of the Olympiad!
