2020 Chessable Masters
The Chessable Masters is the third online tournament in the Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour taking place between June 20 - July 5. Each tournament in the tour has offered something unique and this time the theme will be around learning and improving your chess, which is of course what Chessable is all about.
Stunning 12 player line up:
Carlsen
Caruana
Nakamura
Dubov
Ding Liren
Nepomniachtchi
Giri
Radjabov
MVL
Grischuk
Artemiev
and India’s number 1 Chessable author and former Asian Individual Champion Pentala Harikrishna. I'm looking forward to see some of his French Toast repertoire in action.
The format of the event will be very similar to the Lindores Abbey Rapid Challenge, with two slight changes.
The Preliminary phase will last 4 days instead of 3. The 12 players will be split in 2 groups of 6, which will play on alternating days, 5 rounds every day.
Then follows the Knock-Out phase, which will have the same format as the Lindores event, with one addition: if any match is tied 2-2, the players will play a 2-game blitz match and only then Armageddon.
The schedule for this event is: Preliminaries (June 20-23). Free day on the 24th of June. Then Quarter-finals (June 25-29), Semis (June 30-July 2), Final (July 3-5).

It’s a good time to be watching chess online, that’s for sure.Chris Rice wrote: ↑Mon Jun 15, 2020 10:25 pmThe ... this time the theme will be around learning and improving your chess ....
The theme is interesting. Is there any indication as to what this means in practice?

In practice they are trying to make this association with Chessable.Jonathan Bryant wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2020 8:29 am

Day 1 report from TWIC.
Artemiev leads Group A, Carlsen lost to Dubov and should have lost to Harikrishna as well.

Re: 2020 Chessable Masters
Day 3 report. Bit of a shocker in Group A as Dubov who was leading the group crashed out. The critical game was against Carlsen who unusually said he would have been happy with a draw after what Dubov has been doing to him lately but this is what we got instead:
Dubov, Daniil - Carlsen, Magnus
Chessable Masters 2020 round 09
0-1
The top 4 in each Group go through. Nakamura, Grischuk and Dubov finished on 5 points but when the results between these three players were added up, Dubov had the least number of points and was eliminated.
Final Standings Group A:
Carlsen 6
Artemiev 6
Nakamura 5
Grischuk 5
Dubov 5
Harikrishna 3
Group B finishes today.

Re: 2020 Chessable Masters
Carlsen and Nepo beating Caruana and Artemiev respectively won the first set in the best of three quarter finals. Not sure Artemiev really deserved to lose but it just wasn't his day, in one game where it was completely drawn his signal went and he was disconnected and lost. Well we've all been there I guess. TWIC report.

Re: 2020 Chessable Masters
So drawn that Nepomniachtchi had no reasonable alternative to forcing an immediate draw by repetition, as anything else would have meant playing on a Rook and Knight down.Chris Rice wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2020 10:43 pmNot sure Artemiev really deserved to lose but it just wasn't his day, in one game where it was completely drawn his signal went and he was disconnected and lost.
The Chief Arbiter could have decided exceptional circumstances applied and that Artemiev hadn't lost.

Re: 2020 Chessable Masters
Is this, with Grischuk presumably hoping to win the Armageddon game on time, disconnection or mouse slip, a good advert for online chess?

That's part of what online chess is, like it or not. Bit of a different culture.

Would have been worse if it *hadn't* actually ended up a draw.

True, but if anyone flagged me with K+R v K+R, I would be pretty upset.NickFaulks wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2020 10:19 pmOnly if you choose not to have at least a 1 second increment.MartinCarpenter wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2020 8:03 pmThat's part of what online chess is, like it or not. It may be partly a generation thing. I am told that younger players think differently about this.
