Women's World Championship Match 2020

Post by JustinHorton » Thu Jan 02, 2020 4:36 pm

Starts on Sunday, six games in Shanghai, six in Vladivostok. Ju Wenjun versus Alexsandra Goryachkina. That much I know.

What I don't know is when the games start (is it in the regulations and I'm just missing it?) though I think from the Chess24 ticker that the answer may be 0700 GMT, at least where Shanghai is concerned. (Shanghai is eight hours ahead of GMT, Vladivostok ten.)

There doesn't yet seem to be a bespoke website for the match, do correct me if I'm wrong.

We also know that the arbiters are IA Shohreh Bayat (IRI) and IA Marika Japaridze (GEO). Bayat has been a Deputy Chief Arbiter at the Women's World Championship before when it was a 64-player knockout, and the Women's Candidates as part of this cycle. Japaridze was Deputy Chief Arbiter at the Olympiad and European Team Championship, both in Batumi in the last two years.

I think this might be the first time in history that the two arbiters for a World Championship match are both women?

Latest odds I have: Ju 13/20, Goryachkina 23/20.

I can't find either a website or a start time for the games on a quick search

Doesn't this qualify as international chess news?
I float like a pawn island and sting like an ignored knight

It fits happily into either section; I don't think I'll move it, but I also don't think I would have moved it had someone started it there and suggested it be moved here.

That sounds entirely reasonable.

Do we know when it starts yet?

The start time each day is 1530. So that's 0730 here for Games 1-6. The time difference in Vladivostok is 10 hours rather than 8, so that will be 0530 here for Games 7-12.

I've just found this russian site
The first part of the Match will be played in Shanghai (January 4-12) and the second in Vladivostok (January 15-25). The venue in Vladivostok will be the campus of the Far Eastern Federal University on the Russky Island.

The opening ceremony of the Match will take place in InterContinental Shanghai Jing’An Hotel on January 4.

We're off, with a QGD/Catalan hybrid (or maybe people just call this a Catalan). There is a website, of a sort.

I'm looking at it after 42 moves, Chessbomb's giving White almost a pawn's worth of advantage, but is it actually real?

I didn't think so, maybe an edge. Good to see such fight in Game 1.

Second game drawn: a 5 Re1 Berlin in which White had a small computer edge out of the opening but it never looked like much.
