At least they get to play indoors these days.

Good Lord. What's all that about?

I rather think that photo wasn't taken in 1978

The DGT was a bit of a giveaway, and the lack of scoresheets, and lack of arbiter sitting at the end of the board!

Well also the English writing, and the fact that neither player looked the age they were when the match took place.

True - and did Maia have the trademark hat then?

I vaguely recall a report that Maia had a "lucky doll" that she took to the board back then.

Bit of drama in game three as Goryachkina puts Ju in at move 23 and Black misses it

Today we have one of those Slavs that turn into a QGA, this seems to be a theme match for the kind of openings I like and other people find boring.

A piece on the match from AFP, a French news agency.

"The 500,000 euros on the table in the showdown between holder Ju Wenjun and challenger Aleksandra Goryachkina is the largest prize fund in the nearly 100-year history of the Women's World Championship."

....

"- Help or hindrance? -

But the 500,000 euros for the Women's World Championship match is still only half of the World Chess Championship prize fund. And some believe that female-only tournaments hinder rather than promote equality.

"Perhaps there is an argument for scrapping girls-only sections and best girl prizes in junior tournaments," said David Cox, a freelance journalist and contributor to the website Chess.com. After all, chess is a sport where men and women can compete on a level playing field, and that would push more girls to aim higher and keep trying to improve to be the best player overall, rather than the best girl."

There are various theories why men dominate the top 100 in the FIDE ratings. Cox and Bayat believe a major factor is simply that there are significantly more men than women playing."

The only serious mathematical study of the dominance of men in chess that I'm aware of is the Bilalic et al one, and I think their conclusion was that participation rates accounted for something like 96% of the effect in question.

Lovely bit of technique by Ju in Game 4 to put her one up.

Ju, Wenjun - Goryachkina, Aleksandra

1-0
