Ian Rogers on Twitter:

"The Dubai 2020 Expo is to be delayed for one year, meaning the venue for the 2020 World Chess Championship match is gone. But perhaps this simply provides an extra year for the challenger to World Champion Magnus Carlsen to be found."
Or maybe another venue could be arranged?

I don't think FIDE will want the WC timetable to slip into 2021 if they can possibly avoid it (of course, it may turn out to be force majeure)

That seems fair. I have to admit until I read the Colovic blog, I had not realised there was a real possibility that if we run out of time to complete the candidates, MVL gets a WC match this year.

I imagine there at least some in FIDE who would want to go ahead with the WC, rather than risk losing sponsorship.

I was wondering if Nepo's selection of the Winawer might prove to be a decisive mistake, but I didn't realise it might be that decisive.

Hmm. Wonder what Magnus Carlsen thinks of this (though right now, the chess world is grieving)? Would Carlsen prefer to face MVL or have the conclusion of this cycle delayed? Of course, the incumbent shouldn't have any influence, but as we have seen before their views can count for a lot.

Where is this blog? I have to say that MVL simply being declared the winner seems highly unlikely to me.

He says "If it’s impossible to resume, due to the world situation or any other reason, they can still proclaim a winner from these 7 rounds (Vachier) and the match is on. Of course, there will be outrage, but legally everything will be right: the tournament results are valid as long as 50% of the games have been played."

There's no reference to rules or regulations that also say this. I wonder if he's trying to apply the rule which says the results of a player who fails to play all their games in a tournament count towards the final tournament standings if they've played at least 50% of their games, which is hardly the same thing.

Too right it isn't!

Thanks for the link. I doubt that GM Colovic's suggestion will be treated as serious.

The original regulations have
4. 5. 3. If a player withdraws after completing 50% or more of the games, the rest of his games are lost by default. In case a player
completes less than 50%, all his results are annulled.
which may be thought relevant until you read the next bit
4. 5. 4. No postponement of any game is allowed.
which obviously hasn't happened, as they have been postponed

There's no obvious reason to think that MVL can be declared a winner at "half-time", or indeed that the WC match has to take place later this year, rather than next year after the second half of the Candidates is played

There is a very obvious reason to think the latter.

My understanding is similar to Ian Rogers above, that Fide wants the match to be part of Expo Dubai and that therefore a postponement to 2021 is very likely.

I was interested in Leonard's view that Dvorkovich could have exerted his influence to complete the event. But I am rather glad he did not: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2020/ ... chess-boom

I think Alex and Ian making different points. Alex's implication is that the schedule for the WC is more important in speculating what happens next than what is best for the candidates. Of course if Ian and other well informed people are right and the WC moves to 2021, less time pressure to find a challenger.

It does seem unlikely Radjabov will get anything other than monetary compensation. Possibly after FIDE have wasted some money on lawyers, that is the usual way of things. As Nick noted, Radjabov is considered independently wealthy, and his father in law is a senior oil executive. So he probably needs the money less than most chess players. Possibly some irony if that fact also made it easier for him to decide to withdraw than it would be for another player..

Though, ah, it might make it easier for him to hire expensive lawyers.

Yes, and he's a lawyer himself, so he'll know where to find them

I'm not sure how Radjabov can sue anybody when he withdrew? Nobody kicked him out. But the law is strange sometimes.
