Re: World Teams 2019
Excellent result. Congratulations to the England team.
Couple of questions to ponder:
Was there ever a chance we might have won the event, or were Russia always going to win it?
Where does this result rank compared to previous results in this and similar team events?

Well done England a Great Result -Played very Well and only blip on the card was the loss to China. However they outgraded us on every board so was not unexpected. If Mickey had been on form we may have even won it.
Think,check and then Move !!

Somebody's always out of form though. (In this context I often think of the 2005 Ashes series which England won even though a number of their players barely turned up.)

That is an impressive Russian achievement, especially given their tendency to "under-perform" in team events recently.

For me, the single most encouraging element of a sensational performance is that it was achieved with the top board below his best. The rest of the team have all done well individually before, but have previously seemed able to perform well as a team only with Mickey leading from the front.

Re: World Teams 2019
Just worked out that if England had nicked a minimum win against Russia, and drawn 2-2 against China, we would have tied with Russia on match points, but Russia would have still won by a half a game point.
On individual performances, Luke, David and Gawain all on +3, Mickey on -2, and Jon (Speelman) on -1 (playing when Gawain was ill, I believe). Does anyone know if there are board medals for this event or not?

I would also put the 2018 Olympiad fifth place that qualified England for this event up there as well, even though there was no medal that time. It is clear that the team is progressing and improving results from event to event.Mark Crowther at TWIC on Twitter wrote:"England's best ever result in the World Teams, we had a couple of Bronze Medals in the 1980s. Ranks alongside our very best team results - a win in the European Teams in 1997 and our three silver medals and a bronze run 1984-90 in the Olympiad."

Absolutely not. On that occasion the team as a whole performed as per their ratings and were catapulted upwards by the Swiss pairing system. Good, but not special. This one is the real thing.Christopher Kreuzer wrote: ↑Thu Mar 14, 2019 1:54 pmI would also put the 2018 Olympiad fifth place that qualified England for this event up there as well, even though there was no medal that time.

OK, maybe not. Good to have a debate going though!NickFaulks wrote: ↑Thu Mar 14, 2019 2:08 pmAbsolutely not. I was sure there was another fairly good team result somewhere between 1997 and now.

Re: World Teams 2019
Nice to be arguing about successful results rather than being depressed about the team getting older
Presumably, the team's improved performances have nothing to do with the absence of Nigel?

Re: World Teams 2019
Probably mostly to do with all the players being close to 2700 (rather than 2650) in the past. On live ratings Luke is England #5 at 2683 (World #57) and that's clearly a very healthy state of affairs.

Re: World Teams 2019
Nigel's absence certainly made the team younger!
(Did Speelman set any sort of record for age when representing England, at least in the modern era?)
Was the team sponsored and did that help (i.e. would going have been impossible without sponsorship, and how much did the ECF fund it)?
What are the plans for the future?
[The next big team events are the European Team Chess Championship 2019 in Batumi in October, and the Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk in 2020. I think it is only the World Teams that England have to qualify for, and the others are normal Opens with England's presence depending on sponsorship/funding.]

Yes, it was funded; see this thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=10079Christopher Kreuzer wrote: ↑Thu Mar 14, 2019 2:41 pmWas the team sponsored and did that help (i.e. would going have been impossible without sponsorship, and how much did the ECF fund it)?
There was no ECF money for this event at all really; see the budget for the last Council meeting which only budgeted for the Olympiad. Without the funding, the team would not have gone. A month before the tournament, we had no money and no players; finishing 2nd is really an amazing result.
