Would be nice, but I seem to recall that Sokolov was board one of the Bosnia team which beat our present team (pretty much) in 2010 ..

Not your fault! A rare loss for Adams, I think.

Yes, he had a tough start to the event but a win against Magnus in round 6 (when feeling unwell) certainly helped his confidence.

Was that when Carlsen played a rather "unorthodox" opening?

Yes, that's right, albeit the opening itself wasn't too bad but left black without much activity. A nice game all the same: https://www.365chess.com/game.php?gid=3746469Matt Mackenzie wrote: ↑Sun Aug 14, 2022 4:29 pmWas that when Carlsen played a rather "unorthodox" opening?

I think this post raises a number of potentially important issues.Jonathan Rogers wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 11:12 amFor what it is worth, I think England were quite entitled to ensure David's Gold; it is real achievement for the team as well as the individual.
As to the fact that we will finish nowhere memorable, presumably around 20th having played just one title contender and presumably several outside the top 30 (all very 2006, 2010-2014) - well, it is not an occasion for great criticism. It is an ageing team with (presently) no young players of the calibre of David and Gawain coming through. Playing in India with just one rest day will not have favoured us either. The women certainly had a good event by their standards.
But as to Angus' question - well, indeed, is it still ECF members who effectively sponsor the team, or has private anonymous sponsorship re-emerged? If is still ECF members, then questions about expenditure will always be justified (even if there are good answers), however much it suits the ECF Board to shut down the debate. Mind you, it is that much easier to justify expenditure for an Olympiad, because there is less being spent.
• Did the sponsors of the Olympiad teams (specifically as corporate or individual benefactors or accidentally as Federation members) get value for money for their outlay?
• Did the teams have objectives against which performance is measured?
• Are these objectives consistent or in conflict with any objectives of the Federation as a whole?
In particular, there may have been a choice to favour individual achievement at the possible expense of team glory.
If so, who made that decision, when and with what authority?
Was it made “on the hoof” by the man (I assume) on the spot?
Was it contingently agreed beforehand?
Given International Director is an elected decision, was there a manifesto commitment for or against such practice??

David can add Chicken of the Week to his gold medal, largely at Laurent's insistence: Chicken Chess Club
Peter argued a good decision, because something to put on the front page of your magazine, which is an interesting turn of phrase
