Are fist pumping (Fedoseev) and rapid twiddling of captured pieces (several players) now permitted? I thought they would count as distracting the opponent.

It was a little out of order but it's far from clear that Tabatabaei even noticed.

Karjakin once again wins to stay in the comeptition.

And another win by Karjakin makes it 7 decisive games in a row in this competition, all won by White. Shankland needing to win now to stay in, I think.

But Karjakin wins the eighth with Black. So near and yet so far for Shankland, and that's a shame.

Giri's commentary on the rook ending was a tour de force.

They have player cams which slightly surprised me since usually only for the official streams. Goryachkina has a "what is this nonsense you are trying against me" look which is worth at least 50 points.

Only five White wins and then a Black win in the sixth game, surely.

Yes, I've been impressed with his continued improvement

As Svidler found in a previous edition, Karjakin is very hard to knockout in this format; I'm hoping Fedoseev manages to do so

Rest day tomorrow

I think Magnus will be there for some time on this one. I actually fancy Duda to win

It seems to be fizzling out to a draw now. It's quite hard to make sense of his handling of the anti-marshall. Magnus makes it look like you can just play d5 anyway. If that's so, how do you win with white in the lopez?

We can't assess endgames as being drawn when Magnus is playing. If I were Duda, I'd be a bit concerned at this point.

Yes, having reached more semi-finals than anyone else, he's now reached more finals too

So, Karjakin again in the Candidates
