Ireland's Conor O'Donnell also playing, he currently has 2 IM norms.

Does anyone know the threshold for an IM norm?

Looks like the usual 7/9 to me.

What is Shreyas' IM norm requirement here?

Another success could be imminent in Budapest, where England’s youngest chess hope, 12-year-old Shreyas Royal, is in second place with an unbeaten 4.5/7 with three rounds to go in the Vezerkepzo IM tournament. His third round win was achieved by a crushing attack. This is Royal’s second visit to Hungary, and he has already advanced his Fide rating from under 2200 to approaching 2350. However, a negative clock is ticking as, unlike some previous English prodigies, the Woolwich boy has no sponsor.

Shreyas's Dad, Jitendra, tells me that it can't be done, even if Shreyas wins his last two games for 7.5/10, since he has already met all the highly rated opponents. The round 9 pairing against an 1838 (also aged 12) doesn't help.

Ah that's a shame. Thanks Leonard

I'm a bit puzzled by that.

It's of course interesting that the secretary of the Fide Qualifications Committee should be puzzled, but it would be helpful if the comment could be less cryptic. Shreyas can only reach 6.5/9 or 7.5/10, whereas as far as I can understand the title regulations the minimum requirement against a 2230ish field of opponents is 7/9 or 8/10. What am I missing?

Boosting the rating of his Rd 6 opponent to 2050, disregarding his round 9 win and beating someone of 2224 or above in the last round.

Unlikely, but possible I think.

Chairman, please :!: Probably I have already said more than I should, and anyway Alex has taken the baton. I'm not even sure that is the only possibility, but first Shreyas needs to win both games!

Now that I have been challenged.

A win against Szeberenyi in the last round for a 10 round norm is another possibility, but I gave the more general case.

Sincere thanks to Alex and Nick for their valuable insights above, which have been swiftly relayed to Budapest...
