A memorial event in 2024 was well attended and everyone said that we ought to do this again next year...
Drink beer, play chess
You can do that any time at the pub as there are chess sets to borrow.

The weather is looking good for this event, but you may be saying - 'it's too far to go'. I was at Wivenhoe Chess Club on Monday evening and Wivenhoe is across the Colne but, had the tides been favourable, the ferry would have been the thing, Unfortunately with high tides at 8.23am and 8.33pm the ferry is not an option. From Wivenhoe a 51 bus changing to a 53 bus in Old Heath is doable for those not wanting to drink and drive (it is at an award winning pub after all). If you are coming along, let us know how far you have come because we are awarding a drinkable prize for the longest journey.

The afternoon was an advert on this forum but, more importantly, bacame an advert for chess.
Everyone was made very welcome from absolute beginners to experts, from 8 to 80 and from both sides of the Civil War.

Delighted to be part of a great afternoon of chess in memory of Dave Shorts Palmer. At Ye Old Albion the beer and welcome are top-notch. Players of all ages and abilites enjoying chess. My highlights were: the Citroen Ami trying to find a small enough parking space, new players looking up the rules using Google and the well-loved boards in action. Actually there were so many more highlights making it a very special day. The magic of chess is the social side.
