That's not a combination. The aim of the manouevre was to get the rook to b6, a square both useful for attack (maybe with ideas of mate on b8 and the like) and defence (black is, in the diagram, threatening ...Bb5 winning the queen).

Nxg7 looks a serious threat, but can be met by .. Rg5. If you pin the Rook by Qg4, that no longer works. The Rook is hanging if the Queen moves away. So .. Qe6. Now you play Nxg7 anyway. If .. Rg5, you have Nxe6 and if .. Rxg4, you win material because Nxf8 is check.

It's just calculation of a tactical sequence.

He calculated it as a forced win presumably.

(edit) I was taking a closer look at the final position.

The Knight on c5 is pinned by the Queen on a7 and hit by the Bishop on f8, so where's the win after .. Kh5? You've got g4 check, but how do you win?

Alternatively there isn't a win and White played the line to force a draw. (/edit)

It isn't even a combination really - I mean the piece comes back by force almost instantly then its mostly taking stuff/checks.

It does look odd in the position shown. Why not win a pawn with R(either) takes e5?

If it's from a book or article, perhaps it's a misprint of 3 for 5.

Would someone please explain to me the elements of this combination( theme, motif, etc)?
