To ensure the black king can't go to f3.

[Event "Carlsen - Caruana World Championship Match"]

You might have to ask Magnus! At a guess it's to do with nudging the King out of the zone where it can catch the a pawn. But there may be some deeply calculated other reason.

(edit) As Jack says, it stops the threats that .. Ra2+ and .. Kf3 would otherwise create. (/edit)

What is the point of 38.Re7+ in:
38.Rxg7 immediately only draws due to 38...Ra2+ 39.Kh3 Ra1 when Black threatens 40...Kf3 with a draw by repetition, so 38.Re7+ stops any Black defences involving ...Kf3. It also wins a pawn because Black cannot defend the h5 pawn after 38...Kxf5 39.Rxg7.

In future years this moment may well come to be regarded as one of the most significant episodes in 21st century chess history.

The move is indeed hard to see. After all, a player as great as Fabiano Caruana missed it.

He was expecting to reach the drawing line given by Ian Thompson above after 38. Rxg7, only to be stung by the intermezzo 38. Re7+.

That was effectively that as far as the Match was concerned. Caruana never looked like getting back into it in the remaining Rapid games.

GM Grivas (the TRG secretary of the time) analyzed the game too, but he just pointed out that this was to avoid draw. He also pointed out that Caruana missed the draw a move earlier!

Fundamentally, black is exploiting the strong position of his rooks on the seventh rank and the advanced passed pawn to force mate/the win of a rook/promotion. Are there specific lines you want to look at?
