Apologies, I misread the OP's post. Question for the arbiters: would your decision differ if it was a case of a 90-degree rotated board?

Yes; I would mandate that the game be transferred to a correctly-aligned one if it were.

When did we actually decide that the board should have a white coloured square in the bottom right corner, as is standard now?

I remember a game with Nevil Chan in the 4ncl Div 3 where after about 5 moves I noticed the board was round the wrong way with the white pieces being on the 7th & 8th ranks at the start.

My solution was to wait for my turn before saying "Adjust" and sweeping all the pieces off the board; turning it 180 degrees, then resetting the previous position before playing my move

I can't find anything earlier than 1847 - Staunton's The Chess-Player's Hand-Book.

I wonder if this is actually legal? Of course, the rules allow you to "...adjust one or more pieces on their squares..." but that is not what you have done here. It could be seen as distracting, regardless of whose clock is running.

I would have argued that it would be more distracting for me to be seeing the wrong notation for 3hours or more!

Also being penalised by having my opponent get 2 minutes extra time is fine with me, as my playing style is a worse version of Jack Rudd's
