I'd never considered that I needed to fill a gap in my opening repertoire to face 1b4, but I guess it doesn't hurt to be comprehensive in such matters. John Poole played it against me for Bourne End when I was still representing my school team. Roger may know if this was a regular opening choice. I can only recall one game this century and I replied with a5.

John Poole would usually play English style stuff.

One of the Bucks county and Slough players of the late 1980s/1990s, Clive Bowley, was a regular player of 1. b4. He usually met 1. .. c6 with 2.e3, thereby avoiding a discussion of the a5, Qb6 plan.

I played a London League game in 1973 against the late Abraham Neviasky of Richmond. This was when the .. c6 etc. plan was hot off the press theory. The dark square Bishop got stranded on a1, although engines suggest White lost the thread in the run up to the move 30 time control.
