That you get pasted in a dozen moves because you haven't developed any pieces
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

What's the main drawback of the Kan? That you end up with some hedgehog like position and just have to sit back and wait for white to decide on how to use/misuse his spatial advantage?
Perhaps increments make a difference, but a winning method for Black with the Hedgehog was to hit out with .. d5 or ..b5 during the run up to the move 40 time control when either or both players were short of time having spent the previous thirty or so trying not to doing very much.

From the gist of this thread I get the feeling that the Kan doesn't give black very good prospects, its more like a sit back and take it type variation. The reason I don't want to carry on with the French is for the same reason though.

If there were a shred of truth in that I wouldn't play it.

What are the most typical freeing manoeuvres in it? b5 looks less likely than d5 but that doesn't look so easy as you come out of the opening behind in development.

b5 is just part of development, most often. Not if white has gone c4 of course. Then its a freeing break.

The hedgehog positions from the Kan need quite careful handling. Read and digest Shipov's epic two book series on the hedgehog for some good answers....
(Actually read them anyway, they're genuinely brilliant books!).

I downloaded them and had a good look at them. A bit too detailed and not really what I was looking for but plenty of ideas in them nonetheless.
