Who was the first English player to achieve a FIDE rating (either part or full) of > 2500?
I'm led to believe it was Peter R Markland...
Is this correct?

yes and no. He was 2510 but based on few games, probably just the Hastings 1970-1 Premier.
Does anybody know what happened to him?

He was a long-standing member of Friends of Chess at least up until a couple or three years ago when I stepped down as Treasurer.James Pratt wrote: Does anybody know what happened to him?

Olimpbase are now publishing historic lists which contains Peter Markland at 2510.

Markland had been second equal in that year's Hastings Premier.
His rating might also have included the Student Olympiad at Haifa 1970.

Didn't he later become a noted correspondence player?
