George Clifford Brown was the headmaster of Worcester College for the Blind between 1913 and 1938.

During this period he promoted chess as an activity in which the blind could compete on equal terms with the sighted, teaching Theodore Tylor, Reginald Bonham, Rupert Cross and others.

My latest chess history article looks at his life, and at chess at Worcester College.

While we are on the subject of Worcester College, there was a reply by Howard Staunton to a correspondent in Chess Player's Chronicle (Vol. II, 1842, page 191):

"Mr. H. F. F., of Worcester College, Oxford, was considered a good player. There are now more and better players at Cambridge."

I have never discovered the identity of "Mr. H. F. F.", despite vigilance over a number of years, so I would be delighted if anyone can throw light on him.

P.S. Not the same Worcester College as in Richard's article.

Not the same Worcester College as in Richard's article.
Indeed; Worcester College, Oxford and Worcester College for the Blind are not the same thing, but remarkably Rupert Cross (lovely man) attended one and then the other.
