I would say that he is second from left in the lowest standing group.

Comparing with

I'd suggest that the resemblance is strong.

Oh dear, I could easily waste an afternoon trying to identify all these people...

I don't recall seeing this photo before (although I may have done and forgotten) but I've a strong feeling this is a photo of the competitors in the 1949 British Championship at Felixstowe (the first one run on a Swiss basis). The ones I recognise all took part in that tournament (which can be found at BritBase - https://www.saund.org.uk/britbase/pgn/1 ... iewer.html). With a bit of help from the names at BritBase, I can recognise Golombek, Tylor, Ritson Morry, Jonathan Penrose (I think), Abrahams, Alan Phillips, Frank Parr, Eileen Tranmer, Rowena Bruce, Sir George Thomas, A R B Thomas and maybe a few others (Fairhurst? E G Sergeant?). I'm pretty sure that's the forum's very own Leonard Barden in there, too, and I expect he will be able to name almost everyone.

Reginald Bonham is indeed second from left in the lowest standing group. The photo is of the competitors in the first Swiss System British Championship at Felixstowe 1949.

The last survivors from that British Championship are probably Oliver Penrose (eighth from left in the lowest standing group) and myself (second from left in the second lowest standing group), although Peter Harris (fifth from left in the front seated group) might still be with us.

I'm pretty sure I can still identify every one of the men in that picture , although a few of the ladies might be difficult even with a list of competitors.

I met Oliver whilst photographing the recent Winton British Problem Solving Championships at Harrow School.

I will upload the photographs from that event today.

Many thanks everyone!. Help much appreciated. It looked like Bonham to me, but nice to have confirmation, and info on the picture.
