Father/Son?

Post by MJMcCready » Sun Jan 28, 2024 8:29 pm

Hello there, as you may or may not know, Italy's first GM Sergio Mariotti spent about a year n England in the early 70s, primarily because he was visiting his brother (Paolo) who was an engineeer at Vauxhall Dunstable and also a keen chess player (rated 180).

I was looking at the 1922 London International Tournament on Britbase here https://www.saund.co.uk/britbase/pgn/19 ... iewer.html
and noticed that in last place was a certain Prof. Davide Marotti of Italy. Was this Sergio's father does anyone know?

An internet search suggests that David Marotti died in 1940. Since Sergio Mariotti was born in 1946, this makes the likelyhood of a father/son relationship very low indeed.

Marotti / Mariotti, not even the same name, one letter difference.

If this was an English case and one player was Johnson and the other Johnston, would you be so likely to guess at a relationship between them?

Tbf to the OP, its quite likely both names are spelled wrongly quite a lot of the time.

(as is indeed the case with Johnson/Johnston/Johnstone, in fact)
