K. W. Lloyd
I have been asked by Belgian friend Guy van Habberney (of the Chess History and Literature Society) to post the following enquiry on this Forum and hope readers can help - Leonard, especially you??
Guy is helping Rik Serruys on his latest book: "How Spassky Won – Antwerp 1955" and they are having difficulty in finding out what happened to the British participant:
Please post any answers here and/or write to Guy at [email protected]
The following is their text.
LLOYD, Kenneth William (°23-2-1936 - ?...), was the representative of the British Chess Federation and the first registered participant with Baelen. At that time, he lived in Quinton, a suburb of Birmingham , but was born Stourbridge (Worchester County). His father was a printer-journeyman. He was 19 at the start of the Junior World Championship. According to the August 1954 National Ranking List of the B.C.F., Lloyd was a category 4b player, with a score of 185-192 ECF points. 190 ECF points is currently equivalent to 2125 ELO.
However, Lloyd was not the British junior champion in 1955. He was selected because he was the winner of a tournament in Birmingham specifically organized for this purpose. He wrote a brief article about the World Junior Championship in the B.C.M. of September 1955, in which he praised the organization: ‘I must express my great appreciation of the admirable way in which the tournament was controlled: every possible detail concerning the welfare of the players was seen to with scrupulous attention by mr. Hendrik Baelen and his willing band of helpers’.
Studied in Cambridge.
Took part in the British Chess Federation Championship in 1959. He played very strongly in the 1960-61 Hastings Tournament.
Played in the strong 66th Championship of the British Chess Federation in Chester, August 6 to 18, 1979 (11 rounds of the Swiss system, 48 participants); he finished 33rd with 5 out of 11.
That was the last trace we found of him. It is quite shocking to me how many players of that 1955 tournament have already ‘disappeared into the mists of time’.
Any suggestion on finding out what happened to mr. Lloyd is welcome!

Re: K. W. Lloyd
I played him in the Surrey League in 1997, when he was graded 192. Unfortunately, when I put the game on chessbase, I just put as event "R1", meaning Redhill I vs somebody. My old scorebooks have full details, but they're in storage, and not immediately available.

I think he played in Opens from time to time. I seem to recall he was in the top half of the seedings at the Torbay Open of 1990 when the second half defeated the top half in round one.Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Sun Jan 21, 2024 3:30 pmI played him in the Surrey League in 1997, when he was graded 192.

Re: K. W. Lloyd
Before we enquire into K. W. Lloyd, I suggest that it is established whether he has died, as there could be an ethical problem with investigating someone who is still alive.
I see a probate for a Kenneth William Lloyd on 26 August 2005 (Birmingham Probate Registry), which could perhaps be the right one. That would mean that he died on 17 July 2005. I don't have access here to the death indexes for 2005. Does the age given tie up with his date of birth? If so, I suggest that Guy orders a copy of the will at a cost of £1.50. If help is needed, let me know.

So did I - 27 January 1997, Coham v. Guildford and I also have his grade as 192.Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Sun Jan 21, 2024 3:30 pmI played him in the Surrey League in 1997, when he was graded 192. Re: K. W. Lloyd
Kenneth William Lloyd had a brother, David Edward Lloyd (born 1934), who also played chess (see http://britishchessnews.com/category/player/page/12/). I think David died on the 23rd June, 2010. I can't find a death record for Kenneth - his mother made it to 100 so he might well be alive still!
The Kenneth William Lloyd whose death was registered in Dudley in 2005 was born in 1922.

I see no problem at all in trying to establish if a once strong and prominent British player is still alive (and if not, when they died)John Townsend wrote: ↑Sun Jan 21, 2024 4:22 pmBefore we enquire into K. Re: K. W. Lloyd
Kenneth W Lloyd appears in some BCF grading books I have:
1996/7: C192 (previously 189)
1997/8: D192
1998/9: D193
1999/2000: D188
He doesn't appear in any booklets I have after 99/2000 (well, not the next 2), indicating that he had stopped playing at that point.
In all cases he is listed as a member of Cobham. The 1999/2000 book also gives his date of birth as 23/02/36 indicating this is the same KW Lloyd as mentioned above.
I think Paul Dupre was a member of Cobham at this time - I will draw this thread to his attention to see if he can supply any extra details.
PS, I note that Richard B provided this info (and a bit more) higher up the thread - that will teach me to read the whole thread before contibuting! I reached for my grading books as soon as I read Kevin's post.

Re: K. W. Lloyd
Yes, I played alongside Ken W Lloyd and Alan K May at Cobham. I believe they played together for Richmond & Twickenham in the 1960s/1970s. Both well over 200 in those days. In 1962 Ken was graded 2b and in the top 10 in England. No recent news I'm afraid.
Interesting story of an adjudication he had with Martin Cath. Ken wanted a win and Martin wanted a draw. It came back a win for Martin.

Thanks for the identification of Cobham, we played them occasionally, I suspect when Redhill fell into Division 2. I now realise that R1 probably meant Redhill match, board 1. I also played DE Lloyd (in 1975) - I think he played for RAE Farnborough?

I played Ian Pheby (8 Jan 1996) in the Surrey Trophy for Cobham. I'll see if I can dig out the team sheet, as this is probably the match you're talking about.Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 8:42 amThanks for the identification of Cobham, we played them occasionally, I suspect when Redhill fell into Division 2. Re: K. W. Lloyd
Apologies for insulting Cobham! Redhill spent several years either just avoiding relegation or dropping down and quickly returning, so I assumed that was one of the occasions we failed to survive.
I also have somewhere a scrapbook with reports from the "Surrey Mirror" of our results. Historians will one day try to work out if Thurlow, Thurslow, Thurlough, Furlow, Thurloe and Thurloy, are the same person. Others suffered similarly...
