He was born in Poland in 1868 but as a boy would have found himself at home in Paris, later taking French citizenship. His chess style was perhaps both hectic and attractive - he must have hated draws - here we might even call him pig headed. Frank Marshall once quoted as saying "He follows the wrong path with more determination than any man I have ever met".
