Re: Interesting Books Auction
Heh. 7 hours or so to go and item 90 has reached over £5000, with some other items with bids for several thousand pounds. The 7 or so collections of chess books a possible snip at under £100 each (but presumably pot luck).
Would love to see a record of how that auction ends. Too many sites take down the results soon afterwards. Can someone pop a note on here of the result (I won't be online when the auction ends)?

Chris, if you click on the link which John provided, you can now find the prices realised. If there is no price shown then the lot didn't reach the reserve.

Re: Interesting Books Auction
It's a signed copy from Emanuel Lasker to Edward Mayer.
Edward Mayer was bridge correspondent of The Times as well as being a good chess player. The following obituary of him, on the EBU website, was written by Boris Schapiro, but it doesn't mention chess:
https://www.ebu.co.uk/biographies/edward-mayer
There was a little discussion in this place last year about Lasker's proficiency at bridge. Opinions seem quite sharply divided.

Re: Interesting Books Auction
A website in 2022, particularly one that involves accounts and transactions, that doesn't run on a secure https: protocol? From a personal perspective (and as someone who works in IT), completely unacceptable. Notwithstanding(!? I think that's correct usage) the customs bureaucracy involved in purchases (thanks to the dreaded B-word), while my web browser can't access it without having to disable HTTPS Only mode, I definitely won't be making any bids or purchases.

A book is never going to attract the interest of customs - irrespective of the value they are always vat and duty free in the UK.Richard Thursby wrote: ↑Sat Nov 19, 2022 10:03 pmA website in 2022, particularly one that involves accounts and transactions, that doesn't run on a secure https: protocol? I've asked them for a timescale to upgrade to https.Richard Thursby wrote: ↑Sat Nov 19, 2022 10:03 pmA website in 2022, particularly one that involves accounts and transactions, that doesn't run on a secure https: protocol? And here is the response:
Dear Mr. Upham
We have no plan at the moment to start using https. It is correct that communication can be hacked, but our site has no vulnerable data whatsoever. No credit card information or similar is stored at our site. Only book information and we hardly see our selfes as a target for that.
