Hastings 1957/8

Post by Gerard Killoran » Tue Jul 19, 2022 9:12 am

This BBC website has a short film of the 1957/8 Hastings Tournament.

See how many competitors you can recognise, including a then fresh-faced contributor to this form.

Before Leonard Barden posts the names of just about everyone, I will take a long shot at J E Scholes, near the end three from the right, looking towards the camera. Probably completely wrong.

My first Hastings was the 1961/2 event (a Botvinnik year) when I played in a Christmas or New Year Special (all-play-alls of 6) which included Eileen Tranmer. Quite nostalgic from the 1957/8 film to see the familiar demo board arrangement.

I can't find James Scholes in the list of members of this Forum. Apologies if I have overlooked him.

I felt a pang of nostalgia about the trolleybus, although I never saw one in Hastings.

I didn't mean to suggest Scholes as the forum member - I think that's probably LWB. Just speculating on whom else I recognise.
I also got Keres, Gligoric, Clarke and Penrose. I was spectating there a few years later when I first heard applause during a chess session - Hartston beating Gligoric.

That would have been the 1965/66 event, I presume.

According to the Hastings and St Leonards Observer of 4.1.1958 the congress was opened by Ivo Vejvoda, the Yugoslavian ambassador.

Just to let you know, it's only available to those in the UK. Some of us aren't and so can't watch it.

This is the English Chess Forum.

There are ways to view this content from abroad, but I'll leave it to you to find them.

Yup I know, VPN being the most obvious solution. If I get one later in the year, I will take a look.
