The report continued:

"No penalty could be enforced, except retraction of the second move; the law-makers of chess had never foreseen such a possibility. In the tournament before that, he inadvertently left his Queen to be taken - the last word in chess blundering - and his opponent missed it! Alekhine's supporters maintain stoutly, however, that he will "be all right on the night."

I presume that the latter game cited there is his loss against Victor Buerger?

(in which case, strictly speaking he left his Q to be forked rather than taken per se - of course his opponent missed it, but still won)
