Movers and Takers: A Chess History of Streatham and Brixton 1871-2021

Streatham & Brixton Chess Club's Martin Smith has written a history of chess in his area.

My review:

A copy of this arrived at the Edinburgh Chess Club (and I wish it hadn't!)

It's too good to put down and I spent too much time going through it when I should have been researching chess stuff
(I hope the people who are depending on me researching chess stuff are not reading this.)
Wonderfully put together and my guilty conscience kicked in so I'll have to postpone reading the rest till another day.

I have not got anything from it (yet) that won me loads of games from another
Streatham and Brixton publication 'Nightmare No.3' and a Ken Coates article.

https://streathamchess.org/assets/knigh ... _part2.pdf

Ken's article starts on page 76. (next is the cover of 'Movers and Takers' )

Hi Paul

A quick look at census and BMD records suggests he was Harry (not Henry) Charles Griffiths (22 Nov 1882-26 Jan 1952). He worked as a clerk as a young man but doesn't seem to have had a job for much of his life. He never married. In 1909 his mother was charged with threatening him and was bound over to keep the peace.

He seems to have been very active in Surrey chess between 1903 and 1937.

...but not in 1930/31/32 as he was banged up in Pentonville for Larceny in August 1930. Previous aliases Henry Nye, Henry Griffiths, Henry Harvey.

Was he? What is your source? HC Griffiths was playing chess regularly in 1931, including on Board 2 for Brixton in a match against Richmond and Kew. (Source: Richmond Herald 9 May 1931)

There was another Harry Charles Griffiths committing similar crimes in Worcestershire at about that time.

That's very useful, Richard, thank you. I've updated BritBase to show his full name, Harry Charles Griffiths, for his draw with Aitken on 16.03.1932 and also his loss to Vera Menchik (Surrey v Sussex, bd 2, Brighton) on 01.11.1930 (though the latter is only a stub).
