Yeah, the same for doctors too. As they get older they should be gradually demoted back to being a junior then an intern. Memory fades as we age, why would you take away a title that someone has dedicated their life to achieving?
If you want to know someones current standard - look at their rating.

Well, if you think that, why don't you contact who you are registered with and tell them so? I'm sure they'd be very interested to hear what you have to say.

I think that Nunn still plays occasionally, not sure about Chandler.

Anyway, agree with the above sentiment that chess titles should be for life.

Nunn demolished me fairly handily in a county match recently.

It should also be noted that certain countries got themselves barred from FIDE for a number of years, Myanmar being one example, and all GMs there were stripped of their title as an expose on the corruption in the game.
Are you sure about this

There is also the issue of players retaining their title but remaining inactive, I don't recall this ever being addressed
How and why should this be "addressed"
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

I don't know about being banned from FIDE but they found a way of enhancing ratings, which helps with title attempts. Some of their players had ratings revalued at the very least. It's in the archives, Mark Crowther at TWIC was particularly vocal.

Sure but it's the specific claims that interest me here

Sadly for Nunn and Speelman there were an awful lot of one-shot Candidates in the 80s.
Although they did not include Jon Speelman
You meant to say Nunn.

No, he meant to say Speelman.

Oh, I now focus on "one-shot" candidates. in that case, neither Nunn (0) nor Speelman (2)

I think the nearest he got to the Candidates was losing a play off to Portisch after they tied in an Interzonal.

I am very open to suggestions as to which players I left out unfairly. I think I would put Kuzmin, Balashov, Seirawan and Nikolic before the Veterans' Committee for consideration if there was a Veterans' Committee.

I will post a summary when I'm on the laptop again.
I'm afraid there was a Nikolic that passed away recently.
My weakness is Chess History.
Not sure if this is the same one.

Not sure who that is, but pretty certain its not the above referenced Predrag Nikolic who is being referred to here.

Milorad
Thanks Justin, much appreciated.
For some reason my phone came up with the death of GM Stanimir Nikolic earlier this year but with no date of his passing.
