Calm down, people. That comment wasn't meant to be taken entirely seriously, y'know (though the inconsistency I pointed out is still mildly puzzling). Perhaps if I'd added an EM, or Mr Green ....
"The chess-board is the world ..... the player on the other side is hidden from us ..... he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance."
(He doesn't let you resign and start again, either.)

Congratulations to Anthony Fulton without whose energy and persistence these magazines would never have been digitised.

I loved getting my copy of the Bulletin, as Richard Haddrell brought the blandest of subjects to life! I also enjoyed the house magazines of Charlton called Checkmate, edited by George Fifield, and Ilford, called Kingpin and edited by Jef Page.

Who was Miss D Dobson? (Hertfordshire board 12 against Hampshire.)
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Ah OK, thanks. I should probably have known that.

I love looking at these old bulletins and Year Books. Doing the Aitken quest (now book on 35) when looking for an Aitken
opponents name I have often been side-tracked and stopped mid-PGN entering as I set off on yet another mini-quest.

Martyn Corden! A move he never played figured in my chess education from the good old days
when I use to play out and spot wee errors in the game notes. A hobby computers have killed off.

In Estrin's Blue Book on the Two Knights (published 1973) he gives this position (Black to play)

Saying White ' as in Corden - Rellstab, Hastings 1968. With a decisive attack.'
This position did not arise in the as in the Corden - Rellstab, game and from here
Black plays 19... Qb1+ 20. Nf1 Qxf1+ 21. Kxf1 Bxg2+ 22. Kxg2 Rxd4 (all forced.)

Not much of a decisive attack for White. But it is an ending, so as Black I would still lose. :(

Though its still an interesting position after White plays 23 Rxa7 - wonder what the computer says?

Unless there was a bulletin which someone digitised, games of lesser tournaments from that period published in the magazines of the time have not made it to major databases. That Corden game from the Hastings Challengers of 1968-69 was my first introduction as to how to play, or perhaps not to play, the sequence starting 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 exd4 4. Bc4 Nf6 5. 0-0 which continues to remain important to anyone playing .. e5 to 1. e4 .

Now Mrs. Dinah Norman ...
One of the SCCU Bulletins announced your and Dinah's engagement. I think that you may be unique in that respect; I cannot recall any other such announcement in the Bulletin.

David,
Thank you for reminding me.
That would have been nearly forty years ago.

Heading draw-wards, unexcitingly enough
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

In the late 70's (that is the 1970's in case anybody is reading this in 2090)
I use to post an Edinburgh league bulletin to each team captain with results,
tables, games. I would also add in news of births, engagements and marriages,
thankfully I cannot recall mentioning anyone passing away, and any other
non-chess related items I thought people might be interested in.
It proved quite popular and I was often fed with tid-bits including items for sale.

(Jenners, where I used to work, paid the postage via their franking machine.)

'...that is the 1970's in case anybody is reading this in 2080'

I was reading Blackburne's book a while back and he referred to a move
that was popular in the 60's. He was of course talking about the 1860's.

Civil Service League used to have a newsletter with results, and a few news items, when I took over I started putting real chess news in it, which some welcomed and some didn't...

I hope Jenners has got its sign back!
